During the late 50s me dino was pedaling my bike to school and all over the place. So were a lot of other kids who otherwise walked.
No fear. And no one was snitching out parents who were not watching their kids play unescorted in park playgrounds.

As I recall, we didn't have breakfast, but had mid morning break when we'd pig out on the awesome cookies with milk, juice, or coffee. Yes, coffee! By the time I was in 10th grade I'd grab a handful of peanut butter cookies, a cup of coffee, and step out into the courtyard for a smoke. Yes, a smoke! Some of the teachers would join us and we had a great time. I remember great fish fries on Friday and other days they had decent pasta meals and a grill line with fantastic (huge!) hamburgers. Oh, and the pizza was REAL pizza! All gone by the 70's probably due to regulations. They did stop courtyard smoking in '69.

Edit add: My HS at the time was an all boy school and could be tough at times and I saw some stuff that would land a teacher in jail now days, but there was respect and the students weren't cry babies: "Hey, XXXX, if you weren't such a f*cking jerk you wouldn't have got smacked!".

It sure was a different world in the 40s and fifties in Janesville, WI. No school lunches and no school buses for most of the kids. I had to walk three or more blocks and cross a highway by myself to kindergarten, no problem with being attacked or kidnapped. We usually walked home for lunch. If there had been school lunches I would have not taken part without being physically forced to do so. The school lunches started after moving to Fontana-on-Geneva lake for high school in 1955. there, unless having a license and car, I had to ride a bus to school. I did turn down the school lunches and brought a bologna sandwich that festered in a lock until lunch time. There was plenty of nitrate preservative in the meat so it would not spoil. Eventually the federal government required the removal of most of the nitrates, so I would not like to have to eat a sandwich that sat in a hot locker for several hours today, no air conditioning in the schools in the 40s and 50s.

It's amazing to me that you can remember your school meals from the 60's.

The only school food that left an indelible impression on me was the breakfast oatmeal. It had to be the precursor to Gorilla Glue because it would stick to anything.

Just my 2 cents, but the food in my HS in the 60's was really good. Even after all these decades the alumni of that period still reminisce the fantastic cookies (peanut butter, oatmeal, and chocolate chip) the staff chefs hand made. Yes, hard to believe it was a public school. They tore the place down in the late 70's and that was the end of it all.

Am I missing something here? It seems to me a "rollback" of regulations is an allowance for folks to do more of what they want without interference. Is this a request by certain states for renewed increased interference? Hard to wrap my brain around this crap.

Yes, the very same. They were good for awhile, then we all heard about Michelle's new nutrition initiative. Most people brought stuff from home, but I wasn't so lucky.

I grew up in Detroit in the 70s.
Everybody knew not to eat the slop being served in the public schools.
It was unrecognizable as any form of food.

Unfortunately, that would involve a wholesale change to our legal system to "loser pays". There are a lot of benefits to such a system in curbing frivolous lawsuits like these...

Must admit public school food wasn't all that great yet usually passably edible for old dino back during the Fifties and the Sixties.

Michell O had no idea what she was doing, just had to pick something. She is a disbarred lawyer. The kids were throwing her choices in the garbage, and going hungry later in the day. Want kids to eat healthy, teach them that in science, instead of values clarification brainwashing. We all love comfort food and junk food, but you learn to take vitamins, and try to mostly eat right. This is a stupid lawsuit.
