Getting Screamed at in California
Some of you may have heard about the Stefan (sp) something-or-other last name case out here where the police shot and killed a young man. Happened about a year ago. Well, I guess our DA decided this weekend to not try to charge the cops. I haven't followed it, really. But, I guess tensions are high. I was getting my coffee in the office yesterday and heard a couple of the ladies talking about it. I casually mentioned that some "protesters" who are angry about it may decide to take out their frustrations on people who have nothing to do with it (think Reginald Denny, the LA riots). Well, this lady started screaming at me, creating a big scene in the office. I didn't say anything about race or anything like that. It was really bizarre. I commented later that it was the first time in my entire career (started working at 11 years old) that anybody ever screamed at me at work. I guess she disagreed with me, thought that nobody would be violent, and was really wound up about it. It was like an odd psychosis. This is the funny part. As she was screaming and the other ladies were trying to get her to shut up I didn't cower. I just stood there and sipped my coffee. When she took a breath I said, "Why are you yelling at me? I didn't do anything." Just got a blank stare. A lot of people in my situation would have cowered and scurried off. But, I've done nothing wrong...making life much simpler, I've found. There is a lot of tension out there, apparently. I was a bit naïve about it - not watching the news, etc. So, on the bright side, I've learned something.
