I have been saying before that most problems with dysfunctional kids start at home. Many parents don't want (or can't) deal with raising their children. They are happy to let them go anywhere, parties, friends, but don't bother them. These kids grow up as weeds, with no direction or sense of responsibility.

No wonder they are all too willing to absorb the corrosive doctrines of professors if they reach college age.

It is not as if kidnappings and molestations have become more common. They haven't. Pedophilia has existed in the animal world (humans included) since the dawn of sexual reproduction, as has theft of offspring by childless adults. I too remember the days of the 50's and 60's when riding my bike across town was commonplace among children my age.

But when a child was abducted or abused in some small town in Michigan, no one heard of it in Alabama, or vice versa. Only the kidnapping of a Lindbergh or a Getty or a Hurst were national news. Today, any offense against a child makes "front page" among the hundreds of news hungry internet and cable channels, making all such offenses appear as if they are in your home town. Add to that the child protection industry, the psycho-trauma fixers and schools and police reinforcing parental paranoia with programs of "no touch" and "stranger danger", and it's no wonder our kids are all overweight if they're not in organized sports. They're afraid to leave the house!

Based on what I'm seeing as a family man...I've come to the opinion that way too many kids (especially boys) are in fatherless homes. Just a few nights ago I was driving my son and his friend home. As they sat in the back seat talking I was shocked at how stupid and senseless this boy sounded. His dad is a loser and wimp who lives in another town over a hour away. I talked to my wife about it the next day, I was so disturbed by it. At one point my son interrupted him when the boy was talking about beating up a hobo and said, "Uh..that's not funny." The kid didn't know better. Just directionless... It's possible that most kids are being raised in a similar situation. And - note that the peeeds look for kids who come from a somewhat unstable home environment. None of this bodes well. I'm regularly trying to explain such kids' behavior for my son. Often, it starts with, "Timmy's dad doesn't live with Timmy..."
