Pelosi blocks SOTU speech by Trump

The president sent a letter to Pelosi informing her that the SOTU speech will be held, responding to her first letter before the shutdown.

There is no security concern that is not solved.

Pelosi shot back as expected that "she won't allow" the speech take place.

Since it is no longer due to security concerns, it can only be that the left wants to prevent the President from addressing the nation, which was the idea from the beginning.

Maybe President Trump can make his State of the Union address at the Lincoln Memorial with the Covington Christian High School teens so brutalized by days of ongoing fake news.

    Now that would be something.

The president should deliver the speech from the Oval Office.

That would have the sweet benefit of not seeing Pelosi's mummy like face behind him.

Also, we would be spared from the non-clapping, sitting like stone democrats throughout his speech.

I have been saying this from the beginning. In fact he should hold it there and allow only 1 news media mic and camera, requiring them to act as a pool. Then send recordings to ALL Congress persons with a signature required for receipt. If a Congress person refuses to sign for the video they should be Officially censured and then hopefully a recall election called in their state for refusal.

I think he's decided that he can give any speech he wants without calling it a State of the Union. The advantage of tweaking Pelosi by giving it somewhere else is counterbalanced by eventually having the full circus that the State of the Union has become.

At last report the President has decided not to deliver anything called "State of the Union Address" in any venue except the House of Representatives.

What game might he be playing this time? Trump doesn't take a dump without a plan. (Pardon the pun, and with apologies to Fred Dalton Thompson.)

At this point, if I were the President I would have a statement from the Oval Office and lay everything out that he has done. Then I'd simply say the following:

"At first, I was willing to own this shutdown. That was when I believed that I could come to a compromise with Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats. But I was mistaken in that belief. So as of now, the Democrats own this shutdown: lock, stock, and barrel. They are the ones who are unwilling to come to the table. They are the ones who are unwilling to compromise on a position which only a few years ago they voted to support! So I'll just leave it here: my door is open. When you're ready to end the shut down, you'll find me right here waiting with pen in hand.

I will not compromise with the safety of the American people - to whom I swore an oath to serve and defend. If the Democrats are not willing protect and defend the American people, then the People of the United States will make it very clear to them that they need to change their minds and I call upon all freedom-loving Americans to call upon their Representatives and make their voiced heard."

Trump should make his State of the Union from Mar-A-Lago and point to a photo montage of past State of the Unions and Washington in general and say, in his best impression of Howard Roark, say "I do not think of you." or perhaps "I do not need you."

The MSM told him they would not televise it, so he figured it wouldnt make any difference. His shot would be to do a "rally" and discuss the state of the union there.

they always show his rallies. I already know what the state of the union is, and how the dems are trying to stop trump in any way they can. I see the caravans and migrants, I saw what happened to europe with their version of the migrant invasions, so I am not sure what he could say that would be enlightening to me. The libs would discount ANYthing he said, so whats the use really. Changing liberal minds is a useless endeavor, IMHO

I'm generally opposed to abortion, but in Pelosi's case it would have been warranted. Does anyone have a time machine?

The right of abortion is the choice to not have children and the responsibility that goes with them, not to kill people in a time machine. Nor would killing off Popeye Pelosi solve anything. She is not unique and many of the progressives running the Democrats are as bad or worse. The cause of political dominance by politicians such as Pelosi is the spreading wide acceptance of collectivist ideas. Expressing glee over the prospects of death is a crude, inappropriate reaction and sidesteps the real source of problems.

You're correct on all points. I was just throwing in a little sophomoric humor. The day it happens, though, I'll be driving around town all day with the windows down, playing "Ding, Dong, The Witch is Dead" at full volume.

Contempt for Pelosi is understandable (and widely shared), but publicly wishing she were dead is not appropriate and a misdirection of protest. That doesn't mean we shouldn't prefer that she leave or that we should have any respect for her whatever happens to her.

When I was kid in the 80s I listened to shock jocks like Bob Lassiter on talk radio. I grew out of it. As time went on shock jocks had to push the limits increasingly farther to get a reaction, as audiences became inured to outrageous content. Now the gatekeepers of broadcaster are gone, and it's created this feedback loop the gives us outrageous claims, like wanting US leaders murdered. I wonder if there will be a backlash. Or maybe people like me who learned at young age to ignore lurid tabloid headlines will have to learn more self-restraint to ignore the children of the world who print crap viewable on the same screen where I read journal articles and real news and commentary.

                  Completely legitimate.

The minimum that should be done considering the vicious actions of the left.

Reveling in Pelosi's death, let alone encouraging it, is not "completely legitimate". Contemptuous dismissal of her and her plight is and would be legitimate; "driving around town all day with the windows down, playing 'Ding, Dong, The Witch is Dead' at full volume" would be a waste of a day in one's own life, ascribing more importance to her than she deserves for such personal attention.

What kind of sense of life is that? That is not the source of happiness to a rational individual. With all those ready to follow and take her place it wouldn't even be a victory. At most it would warrant a momentary sigh of relief, bracing for the next stage. It overestimates her importance even to the belligerent collectivists she unoriginally represents. Celebrating and wanting Pelosi to die is an uncivilized and mindless substitute for a proper response to them and what they stand for.

It is not "perfectly right" to crudely revel in a desire for Pelosi's death as a response substituting for rational argument against the Democrats' belligerent movement. Nor is it "perfectly right" to engage in emotionally personal bulk 'downvoting' posts regardless of content.

I've always thought that if I were president I'd bring back the fireside chats. Go straight to the people without all the distractions. One could go fairly deep with the people on matters in that format.

No doubt that the Dems simply want to muzzle the Pres.

      I agree.

What is the rationale for seeing Congress on the floor with their idiotic yelps and sit and stand routines. We don't want to see that, had enough of it for many years.

Especially not wanting to see a Hussein lecturing SOTU Justices about their decisions (wrongly).

In her dreams! All the cards haven't been played. Wait until he drops the other shoe. She may lose that little girl voice and start screaming! I like the idea of him going to the Arizona Border and using it as a backdrop when he addresses us.

Pelosi knew that Trump would get support for the wall in this speech. Thats why she didnt want it. Amazing to me that pelosi actually wants open borders, Who are these great people that are going to come in? The way I see it, the immigrants are coming here for the goodies, not to build up our country.

How about at SOTU that summarizes the tactics and success of the progressive left, expose the incompetent and corrupt members of Congress who are complicit in this, and rally the audience around the Federalist Papers. Naw, won't happen.

Interestingly the only other time that a President's request to address a joint session has not been agreed to was an Obama Request that happened to match the day of a Republican Presidential debate. Boehner said that the House was just coming back into session that day and that there wasn't time for the necessary resolution and other business as well as the three hour security sweep.

He asked for a one day delay which Obama reluctantly agreed to because it would put him up against the NFL opening.

There was a lot of grumbling about how unprecedented Boehner's request for a delay was.

I'm not a fan of the current stagecraft involved with the SOTU address. It's more consistent with monarchial trappings, and has become a sideshow, complete with demonstrators and contempt displays by the Democrats. As I might have guessed, this preposterous ceremony was a product of the Wilson administration, and Woodrow Wilson was as close to a dictator as we've ever had.

The SOTU address should be delivered from the oval office, with a feed to both the House and Senate, and no press. That way the President can focus on the facts, uninterrupted, and the American people can hear what is said, undistracted by the irrelevant clown show around him.

      You read my thoughts.

I think the idea to deliver the SOTU to Congress is that Congress supposed to represent the people, so it is a symbolic set where "all of America" is listening to the Commander in Chief.

However, it has been fatally distorted over the years to express the personal preferences of Senate and House members. When half of the floor stay seated, with stone face and not clapping, while the other half does the opposite, we realize the distortion.

This is part of the same trend as the media clamoring to stop broadcasting press conferences live so they can filter and misrepresent what he says.

    Trump stopped shutdown:

“After 36 days of spirited debate and dialogue, I have seen and heard from enough Democrats and Republicans that they are willing to put partisanship aside, I think,” Mr. Trump said.
The stopgap spending bill, which would end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, provides no immediate funding for a border wall. Mr. Trump said he would continue to push for funding for such a barrier in the next three weeks, declaring: “Walls shouldn’t be controversial.”
He thanked federal workers for going more than a month without pay and said he would ensure they received back pay “very quickly or as soon as possible.”

See what comes out of this.

    Not the compromise he expects.

    Well, Trump blinked:

    https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trum...

He is not going to deliver SOTU speech until shutdown is over.

He is setting a bad precedent.

He should have delivered the speech from somewhere else. This emboldens the left. They take it as a victory. Trump is mistaken if he thinks compromise works with the left and they will reciprocate.

    Will never happen.

You've learned nothing from the first two years of the Trump term.
I'm looking forward to whatever Trump has up his sleeve in this game of 4D chess with the left.
This apparent "blink" was nothing more than the setup for the next move. He knows that compromise will not work with the left and setting something up to expose them for who they are, again,...traitors to the Constitution and "We the People".
I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

        You are wrong.

I know exactly how he thinks and how effective he is in upsetting the left's manipulations.

It very well may be that he was willing to lose the battle in order to win the war.

        We'll see.
