Photos: national parks filled with trash amid government shutdown

Ahead of the shutdown, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said the Department of Public Works would take over trash collection for the National Parks Service.

Hmm..apparently not. So the Democratic peoples republic of DC lied, and they failed to do what they said they would do. Not surprising, they are too busy supporting giving money away to foriegn countries for abortions, and not bothering to maintain security. Let alone pick up the trash. Yet the programmed minions vote these idiots in every 2 years, and the republicrats do no better as they all sold their souls out as well. Let the National Guard clean things up on weekend active duty then, at least the people get something back on what was looted from them...

The respect for nature exemplified by those who "love" nature enough to visit the parks. Those going should, as decent people respectful of nature, bag up and cart away their own trash. Why does it not surprise me to see the hypocrisy in this area like almost everywhere else.

If it is "for the people" then the people should take care of their environment.
As an avid camper/backpacker, we were always taught to carry your trash out! So why couldn't people put their garbage in a bag and take it home with them? i've done that, even when not camping or hiking... just walking around London, carry trash out! (then again, there aren't always trash cans about.... Thanks IRA)

This makes me think: I grew up in California. We were always taught not to litter and make sure you throw your garbage away... (and save water, etc) all that kind of thing. But California is horrifically littered, trash everywhere.

So If I went to my fave parks in US, I would probably pick up the garbage. Why are there not any volunteers going into parks and cleaning up the garbage? If there are, I have not seen those stories. I'm honestly surprised.... I could see certain parks having that kind of support, but maybe i'm wrong.

I'd wager that 80% of the trash is by people who threw theirs on top of full and overflowing trashcans and dumpsters to the extent that its now a mountain of crap, some of which is carried by the wind.

        LAZY.

Exactly, AJ. The same outdoors loving people expect to have their needs catered to, and when evil Trump took away the servants, that just broke the entire American way...

Sounds like a good reason to return ALL national parks to State jurisdiction. (They'd get taken care of better and more efficiently anyway - as proven by a study.)

Well in theory, some of the parks are privately run.... as in, Xanterra I know was one company (not sure if they are doing much anymore with Parks, as I have been out of country for a few years) manage/d various parks. Why aren't they doing their part to upkeep the park they have invested in? I may be a bit behind, but I do remember Xanterra being one company that was doing a lot of "support" with lodge and facilities. I'm sure they are paid for by the government grants/funds. But I just had that thought come up...

Yes, Xanterra manages the concessions at the Grand Canyon South Rim. I get down there at least once a year and they do a fine job of keeping the place looking good. Additionally, the folks that enjoy the parks (I cross the canyon yearly with friends) -- we pick up any extra trash that we see and cart it to one of the rims. There is very little trash in the canyon. I am heading to Death Valley with a group in April. As of right now, even with the .Gov shutdown -- Death Valley Natl Park remains open along with the concessions at Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells. Only a few of the trails have shut down for sundry reasons. The itinerary that I cooked up weeks before the Gov shutdown remains valid.

I was remembering right then! :) Xanterra I know keeps the lodge and main area of Zion (or did anyway!) They were usually the ones doing the trash around the main areas. I believe they have several volunteer rangers as well. I haven't been to Death Valley in a long time!

Have a good time when you go! :) I miss that neck of the woods! UK has it's moments, but the high desert and mountains of SW America can't be beat!

The locals don't have the time to pitch in and volunteer to pack that trash out?

I guess "of, by, for" simply means "I voted for someone else to do it - my job here is done".

Good observation, and BTW, please note that the DC Mayor said they would, until they didin't. Ever wonder why? So they can manufacture clear evidence of Trumps governments evil nature?

Those doing the littering are the same ones who disapprove of the wall and this government shut down. Go figure, liberals full of shit and dumping it where ever they go. Patriots have been cleaning up after them anyway.

A good reason why the nations parks should be decentralized and privatized!
No need for bidding, the people there can run it, they know the parks the best already.
    Just a thought?

That would take some discussion, just to iron out the whole "it belongs to the people" story that was used to justify the land grab in the beginning. We could not have such a discussion in the current environment. May come in the future, if we can cut down the elites and their statist construction...

Tucker spoke about this last night. Where is the Sierra Club and the other three "environmental protection" agency?

Don't they care about the environment now? None of them replied to his inquiry.

It's time for private educational charities to take over these "National Park" sites. We all know, do we not, that National Parks are a usurpation of government away from private persons or entities.

Folks seem to be confusing "those that love nature" with the busloads of tourists that are disgorged at the parks info center and adjoining picnic tables, there is a very large difference. I dont believe the media reports of the parks being trashed, it smacks of what they do best - distort. There was a story yesterday claiming visitors and volunteers - including the unpaid park employee s, have been hauling trash and cleaning bathrooms, it is exactly what I would expect from the folks that actually respect the parks for what they are. The touristas will always toss their cup on the ground - even at home. As you may recall, when Obama was faced with a shutdown, he completely closed the memorials and parks as a punishment to us lesser species.

From what I saw in the photos it looks like the photographer(s) had to look pretty hard to find any trash let alone the mounds of it the article's title suggested....

How many are already UN Heritage Sites, they control, we pay. Let the UN do something useful. People should not be such pigs anyway, clean up after yourselves.

I think the government 'shutdown' should be made permanent, and the currently approved funds re-allocated from useless programs to more important ones. I like the idea that the government should be pared down and 25% of it could be scrapped.

Con-gress is always filled with "trash."
Will people ever take responsibility for their own actions again?
Yes, when the government has been stripped of unconstitutional powers and the free market is allowed to serve voluntary paying customers again.

When I used to go backpacking, it was known that you were expected to pack out your own trash. If I were to go to a national park, I would just pack out whatever trash I generated. If we all did that, the problem would be solved.

Solved much easier than hiring an army of expensive mommies to clean up after irresponsible children.

There you go, who are the people leaving the mess, and why? It all goes back to the education system, and the last 60 years or so, and the parents feeding back into it. It has produced a couple generations of self centered needy children who never had to mature into anything but "give me" people. I work with a lot of them, their level of achievement is to show up for work, anything more is "stressful" and "unfair".

Is it a bad sign if I laughed at the photos? I pictured Trump sitting there with his funny smile.

We were a nation. Now, we're just a government...
