    Hello Solver,
Predictable to those of us versed on socialism and the vast history of its attempts at implementation.

The appeal of socialism is emotional. The hope that it CAN work, if done right. Any failures are dismissed and not attributed to the idea of socialism, because that would kill their "hope" of being emotionally coddled by a government system.

Using that illogic, fascism can work also, if done right. All you have to do is hope, and change.

If I think about it, any dictatorship can work if the dictator respects the people and always gives them what they are willing to pay for- i.e. if he/she is like a perfect monopoly. The problem is that there is no competion to fix things if the dictator or monopoly is NOT what the people want. Capitalism is self correcting.

well, it worked for awhile under Hitler. He was smart and did things efficiently in the beginning but then got power hungry and who knows what later and it fell apart. Capitalism tends to be self correcting over time so long as government doesnt get used to subvert it, like happens here

      Yes.
It is shocking that the vast history of failed attempts to implement a Chavez type dream are not taught.
You don't even have to understand, just LOOK.
"Oh, but that can't happen here." is the usual idiotic response.
But why? Why do basically normal people just not want to know relevant historical experiences.

I have read and heard many times it is just that it was't implemented correctly or administered by the right people... Bilge.

Thank you for the greetings. I am new around here.

Yes, the altruistic feelings towards intimate partners or family or close friends is completely unworkable when expanded out to the general public. Especially with forced participation.
Many churches or church based communities engage in wonderful charitable activities but they are voluntarily entered into.

            Hello DeangalvinFL,
I'm not new around here, although I have been rather busy and absent quite a bit the last year or so. Still I like to check in from time to time and when I don't much have time to get involved I still lurk once in a while just to remind myself there is still a place where reason is valued. I hope you find your time here of value.

Hard to wage a war with no weapons. Chavez started this collapse when he kicked the American oil companies out to nationalize oil production. He believed that the money that went to the Americans for their work keeping Venezuelan production going was outright theft, and that keeping it in the country would enable prosperity for all of his people.

Funny how socialists fail to recognize the connection between hard work, productivity, and fiscal health. When the oil facilities began to fall apart from lack of maintenance and people who knew how to keep things running, he kept blaming the no longer present Americans, and Maduro, who is possibly more ignorant than his predecessor, keeps banging the same drum. Socialists never accept blame for their own bad decisions.

socialism needs a sugar daddy of some sort to pay the bills. It cant generate wealth on its own- it can only spend the wealth someone else provides.

        YES!!!
That is the moral of the Atlas Shrugged story.
        Soooooo, stop helping them.
Stop working for and trading with organizations that bang the drum of "We must help each other". The "must" being the most evil word in the sentence.

I try to do that, but have found it very difficult. I would have to stop paying all taxes (which I have thought of actually by just going "galt" and trimming down my expenses and the need for income), and have to give up most purchases from large companies that go along with this drivel. I dont give to bums at all, and not to charities either (since they give to bums). Bums are everywhere in Las Vegas where I live, and they are constantly asking for money. I tell them that I have money, but I am not going to give it to them (one of these days I wonder if I will be shot or stabbed for saying that...)

Well, you don't have to kick people while they are down. Perhaps they tried to stand up for rational values and were kicked to the curb.
Most probably are bums but I advise you to be careful, for your own sake, with prejudgments.

Here in Vegas, its not hard to tell. First of all most all of the street beggars ARE entitled derelicts. Secondly, the missing teeth from meth use is another giveaway. Thirdly, they stake out street corners and are there every day, which means to me they just dont want to work, but think begging will get them more money.

I dont kick people when they are down, but its not my problem either. There are a lot of ways to get back up, and they should be figuring out how to do that sustainably, and not begging every day.

Most of them are on drugs, and that is definitely NOT my problem, nor one I wish to get in the middle of. If enough people died of drug use, perhaps it would discourage drug use among people who currently do not use drugs.

I would challenge you to find some beggars who stand for rational values and were licked to the curb. Not an easy task, at least in Laa Vegas

A humanitarian disaster is on the way. And our children are being fooled by Bernie and his ilk of nitwitacy into believing Socialism is workable. Damn them!!!

Its the whole idea of socialism tht makes it unworkable. No matter how many ways its implemented, it cant't work because the basis of it is incompatible with human nature.

It is incompatible with human nature for group based forced activity.
It is compatible with family human nature. That is what gives it its powerful appeal. "If only we acted more like a family - ya know - helping each other out."

Well, maybe in "some" families. I think a lot of them arent on the same page at all, with one or the other parents just laying down the law and thats that. Might be good in the end if the "law" was based on reality, but what if it wasnt.

I like what my father said when I was in senior year of high school. "Have you decided where you are going to live once you graduate? Truth is, I never thought about where I was going to live, but he was telling me its time I did. Probably the best thing he ever said to me.

            Interesting.
I have heard something similar from other people also. We each have our own family experiences.
Not all families work as ideal models.
Even more interesting is that many who crave the socialist mantra seem to be from not so good families. Kinda goes against my thoughts of family being extended out to society as a basis for why people find socialism appealing.

I think the appeal of socialism is emotion, not rational. If we could only have the feeling tht we all together as one, everything would be ok. I suppose the issue is that each person is an individual, and how would it be possible to all people to be enough the same to actually foce a society to be a certain way. But the socialists are focused on the IDEA of how great it would be, and they wont let go of the hope. Unfortuntely, socialism cant work, because it would require a human to give up their human-ness and individuality.

"But golly, that couldn't happen here."

Just a few short years ago, Venezuela was a model growth nation. And nothing has changed except hmmmmm, I wonder what . . .

Subsidies maybe, overtax the productive maybe, don't let prices adjust to reflect reality maybe, free health care maybe, everything the Bernie Sanders fans want and NEED maybe?

Even Castro wrote in his Diary, that he could have NEVER did what he did without the help of the Media. They gave an award to one of the New York Times journalists he was firmly in power.

And people wonder why Trump calls the Fake News an Enemy of the state!

Why isn't this ever shown on the network news or other social media news?
An imminent collapse affecting millions of people of a country a short distance away that portrays all of the Bernie Sanders "paradise" promises.
    Why?

I was trying to think of some smartass remark, but I realized that being healthy and wanting to work and unable to do so, and my family going hungry is no joking matter.I pity the fools who announced their own death sentence while still mouthing the praises of socialism.

Socialism is a two part system. The people selling the idea know that it won't work for the benefit of those that will be plundered and it will provide a method for the leaders to plunder the state and everyone in it. The followers worship the idea that it will mean they don't have to work or concern themselves about the possibilities of reality because no matter what happens the state has promised to fix the problem, which it does by creating more opportunities for those who plunder to steal and violently control others which in turn creates more problems for the followers.
Interesting that the woman who was interviewed and asked how to fix it referred to the model (socialism) not working because someone tampered with the price of oil which wasn't their fault and that the solution is for a different model (of socialism) to be tried. The followers never stop believing that after millions starving or being killed by their own government that it is still a more humanitarian way to live and they just need a new model for the leaders to use and it will work. That the followers cannot see reality and adjust to how they live reminds me of the promises of religion and their followers. It doesn't matter how badly it works out for the followers they keep following and asking the leaders for a new plan!

I think that a requirement for running for any political office in the USA should be a stint of 6 months living in Venezuela.
