“After 108 years, the Boy Scouts program is set to drop the gender from its name and re-emerge as "Scouts BSA," a more "inclusive" group that will also soon welcome girls in its ranks...”
I don't know if you are simply wrong or I live in a bubble. I travel some, but it's mostly to tech companies and conference centers, so I'm not really seeing the diversity of the world. My bike ride to work takes me through many neighborhoods. Some of the middle class neighborhoods are worse than when I was a kid, but other areas that used to be poor are not "gentrifying" with the residence moving to the new poor area. If people are angry about politics, they do a good job hiding it.
I wonder if even in great turning points in history there were people like me, drawing plans for aqueducts, blind to the problems and changes. I started thinking about this ten years ago as I biked past an apartment building on the way to work. I didn't know anyone in that area. It's a former poor neighborhood that's now gentrifying. Maybe the angry people are in some of those windows, I thought.
I hope you're wrong and my world is the rule rather than the exception.
I differentiate between the Scouting Board and the individual Councils and Troops. The Councils and Troops are filled with the excellent people you talk about, I completely agree. But the Board sets policy that Councils and Troops must follow or risk losing their Charters. And the Board has become corrupted by people who do not value Scouting, but see it as an educational institution (because it is) that needs to be bent to conform to their ideology rather than to stay true to Baden Powell's vision and standards.
As to whether or not the world is falling apart, we differ in that opinion. The moral decay I see all around me - even in the heavily red state I am in - is of stark contrast even to twenty years ago. And I see it getting worse before it gets better. The intolerance of the left has brought war which right now is ideological and plays out mostly in politics and the media right now but is growing into mob violence. And out of that war will come either the slavery of all moral people and the fall of the Constitution, or the destruction of the leftist ideology and the return of the people to the principles of self-reliance, independence, morality, individual rights, and honor and decency.
To a certain degree, I agree that it is a skills thing. But the intent of Scouting according to Baden Powell is to teach boys to become men. You can't do that in a mixed group. It is impossible. You can not teach girls to become men.
I don't have a problem if someone wants to set up a parallel organization for females. But I completely disagree that you can properly conduct the Scouting organization in a mixed-gender environment. That's coming from not only ideals, but practical experience both as a Boy Scout and as a Scoutmaster and as a father of nine girls.
The place where my scout meets is where he first read about transgender rights in I Am Jazz in a book displaced in the lobby of the Methodist church I attended when I was his age. People who respect individual rights are everywhere.
"the right of separation of boys and girls" We have that right, but I don't see any boy/girl issues at their age, so I welcome my daughter helping at their events. My daughter is the natural engineer; she helped the pack make games for the younger den. In my travels I see everywhere these liberal pressures to let people be themselves. It feels like we're taking over except for in theocracies.
" it was destroyed by leftists" Maybe the Scouts and the world are turning to worms, but they're with some really good people in my son's pack. I watched them tell the kids at the beginning they'd learn to use dangerous tools, fire, and knives responsibly. They have followed through. My son carries a Craftsman knife. My daughter has a hairclip that turns into a mini tool set. The kids cut their own pinewood derby cars with a bandsaw-- with the parents and leaders turning responsibility over to the 9 y/o's not to cut off a finger, once we saw they were ready. They're on the road to becoming independent adults. My close friend and colleague went through Eagle Scouts and his helping my kids, humbly embodying those values they have the kids memorize to earn badges. Regardless of what happens to the rest of world and if the value of badges gets diluted, I'm blessed to be surrounded by honest selfish people, people who much of the world might consider "leftist". My son won third place at the pinewood derby. Most kids didn't win any awards. My son, on his own initiative, went to the person who taught him the bandsaw and said he never could have won without him. I was impressed at his initiative to thank his mentor and to congratulate honestly the people who won 1st and 2nd place. I could have benefited from more friends like him at age 9.
I can't speak for the whole scouting organization, but there is a sliver of the world, ironically a sliver where 90% of us are what the rest of the world sees as leftists, that will not be destroyed. I just don't see the destruction happening, even when I travel outside my Madison bubble. In the past 24 months I went to Canton, Sicily, Portland, Little Rock, Memphis, London , Lexington, and Tampa. I don't see the world falling apart, being destroyed. I see people freed from the ancient fears, superstitions, and duties, in a coffee shop in Palermo, and Uber in Portland, and a gas station in Lexington-- people who accept without question their lives are theirs, without regard to duty to family, church, or country. Respectfully, I don't see the wold being destroyed. I see the problems, but I see the arc of history bending toward individuals living free and building institutions that respect their rights.
The separate activities and inequality will be the basis for the next law suits. Do not expect this to be the end of the story. This is another attack on males and masculinity by the alphabet soupists. The cancer of so called progressives has become an autoimmune disorder destroying values.
When I divorced #1 I got the kid, the car, the bank account, complete care, custody, control and education of THE CHILD and visitation at my convenience. I did let him have the divorce and he paid the court and my attorney!
Are the people supporting things like this Unisex item afraid of something? For the life of me, I cannot understand this. Of course, I was never for "equal rights". I liked it when we had it better than you guys! Opening doors, etc.
I am more of the opinion of freedomforall. To have both girls and boys in an organization is not the knell of doom.
I imagine that similar outrage existed when grammar schools were made co-ed; I remember such rhetoric when colleges became co-ed. It has not meant the end of colleges.
The key is to make the Scouts still mean competence and responsibility - which is eroding because of our culture. Having girls in the troop is trivial. I read several comments below about the presence of girls meaning that boys could not be strong and capable. Huh?
Whoa! Something very important is being overlooked here! "Liberating" merit badges for Getting Some! Yay! The younger the coupled kids the more prestigious the badges. Of course, same sex couplings would be even moire prestigious in this brave new bizarro world of lib scouting.
I think the real motive here was to drive a wedge between the generally conservative churches and the boy's 'paramilitary' group they supported. Many churches dropped troop support after Tillerson and his gays let the gays in. Thankfully, my kid got his Eagle and aged out just before all of this happened. But he won't even talk about the "Scouts" now.
Wow, that was great! Women are getting so tedious and boring.. And what about those overnight camping trips. They could get very interesting. Might as well say good-by to the late great Boy Scouts of America.
If they're still going to keep the boys and girls separate, then why take "Boy" out of the name? It seems hypocritical to me. Not that I think that the boys and girls should be thrown together.Girls may very well be able to learn about outdoor camping and such, but probably they should learn it separately--especially with such issues and maybe staying out overnight in tents. I have had no experience with that organization. It seems like something that Objectivists and their children should stay out of----doesn't it have a history of trying to inculcate religion, also altruism?

Interviewer: “Well Johnny what is that badge for?”
Johnny: “I’ve been told it’s my favorite badge because it means I was there, I participated.”
