Of course the data is right out there. Hope the young people go figure out that 60% goes to welfare, social security and medi-xxx.

It's the 21 trillion debt that is the black hole. When the economy implodes and the millennials realize there are simply not enough rich people to loot to pay the debt there will a lot of gnashing of teeth. We simply can't continue to raise the debt ceiling and expect good things to happen. Free stuff sounds really good until the bill comes due. No free lunch.

But just change the value of the dollar, and all is forgiven, no?

Ah yes, the miracle of inflation. Something about the Wiemar Republic comes to mind.

But government has changed the way they calculate inflation. Now when something costs more, and Capitalist induced technology has made it so you get a better product, it isn’t calculated as costing more. Many times it costs less, even though it cost more. This was done since Social Security payouts are legally tied to inflation.
Hard to discover the true history of inflation when they keep changing the math.

Most of the income taxes do not go to pay social security. Some of it pays off dictators in foreign lands while pretending it is for their social programs (foreign aid). Some is used for welfare programs but not much. Road taxes are collected on the sale of all road fuel, income taxes do not pay for the roads. Most of the taxes simply pay the interest on the national debt leaving congress with the only option for spending to borrow more money (deficit spending) increasing the debt and the interest that must be paid next year requiring more taxes, i.e.; the ACA (healthcare act) and spending that money on all of the bureaus that regulate our lives and tell us that they are doing a good job.
Social Security tax is a separate tax and was promised to be a secure fund that would only be used to pay the premiums of Social Security. It was immediately embezzled by the politicians to spend on work programs at the time that were supposed to restart the economy during the depression, which never worked! It was also embezzled for the Viet Nam War.
Social Security collected from the taxpayer is matched by the employer resulting in twice the amount of money collected than most people realize. If it were run like a business it could actually pay for retirement. It is a forced retirement fund reducing the ability of individuals to have enough money to fund their own retirements.
Some retirement funds are raided by the feds, i.e.; the primary bond holders of General Motors had their money stolen by Obama and given to the Unions to help them resurrect their mismanaged retirement funds destroying millions of other Americans retirement plans while repaying the unions for helping with Obama's election.
The phony complaint that most of the money collected goes to pay social security recipients was invented by those who govern trying to misdirect the anger of the public to get their representatives to try to stop paying for the retirement funds that were promised so the politicians can steal the SS funds outright and use them to placate the socialists, which is most of the society.
If you add up all of the federal taxes, gasoline tax, excise taxes, phone taxes, inflation, etc. it is closer to 60% of your income for the feds, then add state sales tax, property tax, state income taxes and etc. and it is closer to 75% that pays for taxes and does not purchase goods or services. Few of those who are interested can figure this out and for kids who are whining about not paying taxes but still wanting more from the government are not going to figure it out either. They will demand more from 'the rich' assuming that it doesn't belong to those who earned it.

I believe the interest on the debt is "only" $200 Billion per year. Also, all funds collected for social security have already been spent in the general fund. There are IOUs for social security, but taxes will have to be collected to pay these. There is no money for social security. So yes, a big chunk of our taxes pays social security.

Wow. Regardless, social security is a ridiculous, broken program, which “little boys and girls” is just what the guys you love want more of.

It was never intended to be a program that worked. The reason that the age was set at 62 in the beginning was that most people were dead by then and they figured they would seldom pay out. That is why the politicians figured they could get away with it. I have been against the program since I started working at 13 and found out how it works. Are you implying that I am for this program?

Not at all. Just pointing out it is broken, and can’t be fixed (presently) because people want their money back. It is Chapter 11

I agree, it is a failed idea. I used to point out to people that if you put the same amount of money into a savings account you would be better off when you retired and if you died early the money would be available to your heirs not simply disappear. Couldn't even convince my own mom, she loved Roosevelt but then that is the era she grew up in.

Kind of like investing your hard earned money in a green index fund and finding out that most of it went to big coal and oil companies.
I guess if that was called a tax, it would be perfectly ok.

A green index fund would invest in only “green” company’s that only promote wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, tidal, etc.
You know, all those unprofitable companies that have been getting the big largesse from governments, thus making them very profitable.
Although a bunch still went bankrupt, costing Americans billions. Remember Solyndra?

Couldn’t wait to hear all the reasons those companies failed, and he index dropped, except the simple answer, that it is presently unaffordable.

The index went up, mostly because of the businesses that wouldn’t have survived in a free market were subsidized by the livehoods of the people.

Sorry son. Maybe we will be able send you to college next year.

In a free market, good technology will happen but politicians are very very impatient and abuse lots of other people’s future earnings to spend on the wackiest ideals.

Even talentless, brainless turds deserve to keep the revenues that ignorant people voluntarily give them in the free market. Income taxes are unconstitutional theft.

Indeed. Only that the masses learn 1) money paid to government is generally wasted, and 2) 60% of it already goes to your favorite social programs, which have been unsuccessful for 60 years.

Yep. Most of the loot goes to keep the growing number of dependency programs in full gear. A dependent person is more likely to create future generations which will demand more free stuff. Stuff most politicians are ever so happy to dole out. So much free stuff that real charity can’t even compete.
    Isn’t politics grand?

I'm just hoping people start to see. I've have a number of conversations with relatively sharp (but ignorant) young people, even middle agers, that think military spending is the largest item in the budget.
When presented with the facts, they get thoughtful.
I'm hoping questions like this, perhaps precipitated by an unpopular administration, get people thinking.

I've heard it said that the easiest way to control spending on Medicare, Social Security, and FICA would be to make people pay it on their tax returns rather than have it confiscated out of one's paycheck. I'd love to ban the government from being able to place what are effectively liens on my paycheck for social welfare programs and see those programs' funding tank.

Taxation is theft. A simple truth never taught in public schools. Instead, it is preached as, taxation is for the greater good. Therefore, more taxation is doubleplus good.

Taxation is bad as it is, but worse since it increases government, which always decreases freedom, and government begets government like a self licking ice cream cone.
Not surprising that schools, paid by the government, don't teach that taxation (their lifesblood) is bad.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it theft, because we agree to it - to a degree - and there are some legitimate functions of government which can not be carried out without a mandatory source of funding. The problem is that we have allowed illegitimate interests to be overseen by government and so the power to tax has been sorely abused.

Agreed? Must be that social contract I’ve never read, signed nor even seen. Kind of like the mob goons coming to my store wanting their protection money because, as they tell me, I must pay for only what they can provide.
I still hand over my money.

I should be more specific. Under a representative government, we consent to be taxed. It is one of the enumerated powers in the Constitution. This is not to say that what the tax money is used for justifies the taxation.

Under other forms of government, that representative agreement may not (i.e. probably does not) hold.
