The World's Largest Mass Extinction May Have Been Caused by Burning Coal

Really? I used to think PM was a reliable, steady company that vetted their material. Instead, they take a really loose theory and turn it into a "Global Warming, see what happens" statement. Arggg...

    More rubbish, not science.
Don't bother to explain how the fire was caused.
Don't explain how totally different a single massive fire worldwide is from having small fires over centuries.
    Biased rubbish, not science.

Not that I disagree with you statement, but in all fairness, they do throw this out as the "how": "The idea is that volcanic eruptions released lava that found their way into underground coal deposits built up over previous eons and ignited them. " That is about as good as "well a meteor, hit a gas pocket, causing an underground fire to go to a coal seam...". If that is so true, why have they allowed the underground coal fire to burn in Pennsylvania for the last 40 years? Isn't it killing the environment? Not one global warming group ever mentions it.

        In FAIRNESS?
The writer is a biased asshole. There is no FAIRNESS in the article. He doesn't deserve ANY FAIRNESS.
"Right now, we’re in the middle of another mass extinction caused by our insatiable appetite for fossil fuels, and there’s a good chance that our own species could be one of the casualties."
Does that sound unbiased and FAIR? ITS BIASED LYING RUBBISH!
Does the title say it was volcanic eruptions that caused it? No, he misleads the reader hoping the reader will assume that its the same as having coal burning power plants that barely release ANYTHING.
GUT THE SCUM THAT WROTE THIS LYING BULLSHIT. USE A DULL KNIFE TO MATCH HIS INTELLIGENCE.

These people are our enemies. Stop giving them any breaks. They support stealing and looting from anyone who doesn't have the ability to blackmail them. Get them out of the gene pool ASAP.

I was not adreeing with them I was merely pointing out they had "explained" how the theoretical fire was caused. You are correct, it is all just vague nonsense from the get go, as I could easily make up a story that aliens came and hunted them to extinction with as much evidence as they have, carbon levels or not.

      Kudos freedomforall.

The only "evidence" this article is proof of is the continued leftward slide of the publication into the pseudo-scientific realm of political fantasy. I ask just exactly what does this type of article have to do with "Popular Mechanics" in the first place? This is also "evidence" of why I no longer waste my money on this rag.

The climate changed against the dinosaurs. Wouldn’t want that to happen to us. Does it really matter how much money has to be spent in order to stop the climate from changing? What about the children? Are you that selfish? Or are you one of those deniers that should be shut up?

Response, "If you are arrogant enough to think you can control the earth, then you need some serious counseling". Size DOES matter. The same people who would impose cap and trade and ruin the economy to save us from a theoretical issue, and who refuse to consider other sources of climate change, such as solar output, earth changes, pole migration and cosmic rays impacts, will impose their worldview on everyone else, as well as use the same devices they hate and tax. Al Gore flies around all over the place, why doesn't he use a sailboat? Oh, yea, hes too important.

Gore's utility bill $2500 per month for one home
and he just bought a second for $8.5 million.
But it gets better. Yes he flies a lot.
Gore has vilified fossil fuel usage for decades. In his new book, he writes “Virtually every news and political commentary program on television is sponsored in part by oil, coal and gas companies — not just during campaign seasons, but all the time, year in and year out — with messages designed to soothe and reassure the audience that everything is fine, the global environment is not threatened.

But what did Gore turn around and do? He sold his Current TV network to Al Jazeera for $500 million. Gore reportedly pocketed $100 million .

So what’s the problem? The problem is that Al Jazeera is funded by Qatar, which receives the bulk of its wealth from fossil fuels.
The hypocrite ignores the fact that he had criticized the influence of fossil fuel money in television, but then got very wealthy selling his network to another network that exists because of fossil fuel money. Al Jazeera had the money to pay Gore $500 million because of fossil fuels. Does Gore see a contradiction in his position. While Gore said he understands the criticism, he disagrees with it because Al Jazeera is a great network and has won major awards.

Now, someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t ever recall Gore saying that it was OK to take fossil fuel money in television as long as the network is a good network or is one that has won awards. He is engaging in the illogical fallacy of special pleading, which is where someone applies a special exemption to their rules when those rules contradict their actions.
Just like the law makers who don't follow the law.
          Wake up America!
They as law makers should receive double the consequences of ilegal actions.

Bullsh@t I say.Fighting it in Oregon as well, as Kommie Kate sees it as an easy way to scam a billion for PERS. Greedy slime bags, the lot of them.

Yes Nickursis . The greedy hypocrites , they are so all knowing (puke) It is the same story with gun control. They think their laws will protect us from mass shootings. I guess the law that makes murder a crime isn't enough.
Disarm the law abiders it's much easier for a home invasion and an easy get away. Hell they would probably break their arms patting themselves on the back for the drop in prison population because the crooks have no resistance.

Gee, must not have been "clean coal: - idiots.. Not surprised it came out of Utah. They take a natural happening, out of proportion, and try to relate it to the current and past use by humans. Next they will be blaming floods on water, which we should do away with. This is not science, are there no real scientists anymore? Global warming just had to come up, with no substantiation.

The emissions of one volcanic eruption results in more contaminants being thrust in the atmosphere than all historic human activity. Anyway CO2 is not a forcing agent in global warming but seen rising in the aftermath of warming periods. We're heading for an ice age. The article is bunk science.

...And, the World War 2 was caused by greedy landlords in the slum areas of Berlin.Since being a landlord was mostly attributed to Jews -- well, you know the rest. And if you believe that you'll believe coal caused mass extinction .

The spirit, soul, atman, whatever, lives independent of the body and either returns to the "great all" or just floats around looking for new flesh to inhabit, or being next to God, whatever you concieve him to be. I must admit that it is a waste of perfectly good material for such a short existence. However, there's so much we don't know that I would leave many options open. WARNING, do not take this as a concession in any form whatsoever as conceding to afterlife in the religious sense.

The book "Soul Survivor" will make the case for some sort of existence post death, and the fact that whatever counts as "spirit" do indeed come back. It is the story of a very young boy, who is tortured with dreams of fire and airplanes and war, who then is counseled and starts to describe things about WW2 and flying, the ship he rode, and his death being shot down. The kid found out that he knew the men he flew with, and was reunited with them at a reunion and was able to actually discuss and tell stories with them about "remember when". None of the vets there left doubting that the kid was the guy who was killed off Okinawa in 1945.

Hard to know, since apparently we are configured to look forward, not backward. The cases I have heard of are some overtly aware children, and several people under hypnosis, one of whom described in excruciating detail being on a submarine in the Pacific in WW2, identified the boat, the date and where it was, and it was all confirmed from records.

Especially WW2, where getting pounded by depth charges was a routine result of an attack, along with the bonus deal of running mines, which are very sneaky.

Their torpedoes were deadly, but until homing devices were used it was a crapshoot as to hitting anything. Then along came Hedy Lamar who invented the torpedo homing device which turned the odds in favor of the submarines.Yes, I said Hedy Lamar the movie star, who wanted to prove that you could be beautiful and brainy as well. She even patented the device.

I have seen that story. However, there was never any real use of such a weapon in WW2 as it never got put into wide scale production due to issues with making them, and the fact she had invented it. They spent the are figuting out the firing pins were too thin, the depth mechanisms were bad, and the magnetic exploder was crap, all because of government bureaucrats who refused to spend money on adequate tests before the war, and the idiot secrecy behind the exploder before it as well. It wasn't until the MK37 came into wide use such a warhead was workable and tht was the 60's. Heck, we even had MK14 (WW2 vintage) on the Gudgeon in the 70's before getting the upgrade for MK48. The MK48 control unit looked weird in the control room as it was the only digital thing in the fire control system.

AJ, I am not sure being melded into an Overmind is an "afterlife". Although I would say there is some factual evidence that we all have past lives, given the large number of people who have had regressive hypnosis, and who have provided details of other places and times, which then are verified independently.

Here is some details on the boy and another girl, who was a 30's actor who died in Hollywood.

If a massive amount of coal was burned it is likely an impact from a large comet or astroid that turned the earth into a fire ball and then a snowball, not much can survive that .The Earth would be shrouded from the sun from smoke dust and particulates . The theory in the article is not even peer reviewed.
But any chance for the global warming crowd to push the anti human agenda.
"it could show us what’s in store for our planet in the present. It’s no coincidence that coal burning led to the largest mass extinction in the Earth’s history: it’s very bad for life and for the planet. Right now, we’re in the middle of another mass extinction caused by our insatiable appetite for fossil fuels, and there’s a good chance that our own species could be one of the casualties."

CO2 comprises .003% of our atmosphere. It is not toxic.

Besides suppressing mans progress another tactic is to slowly poison the air.
Lots of peer reviewed facts regarding the danger of heavy metals. So to "save us" they spray the air at 40,000 feet 24/7/365 days of the year.

Now, however, there is another far more insidious layer of toxicity that is not being addressed at all in any mainstream, corporate-controlled news, and it is affecting our very survival. It is, however, being addressed more and more by independent researchers who have supporting evidence to back up their Internet reports.

For more than a decade, first the United States and then Canada’s citizens have been subjected to a 24/7/365 day aerosol assault over our heads made of a toxic brew of poisonous heavy metals, chemicals, and other dangerous ingredients. None of this was reported by any mainstream media. The US Department of Defense [DOD] and military have been systematically blanketing all our skies with what are known as Chemtrails (also known as Stratospheric Aerosol Geoengineering).(2) These differ vastly from the usual plane contrails that evaporate rather quickly in the sky. Chemtrails do not dissipate. Rather, planes (fitted with special nozzles) release aerosols “lines” in the sky that do not evaporate. Multiple planes are deployed, flying parallel (or often “checkerboard” patterns) overhead; and soon the sky is blanketed with many grayish-white lines [miles and miles long, although this is changing]. At first, these lines are thin; but soon they expand and, in a short time, merge together. Our once-blue sky has vanished and has been replaced by a grayish-white toxic haze that blots out and greatly diminishes our usual sunshine.

I don't think it's correct that global warming contributes to the current mass extinction event. My understanding is the Holocene mass-extinction started long before humans activities began releasing large amounts of carbon. Different human activities are responsible for the two phenomena.

If coal in deposits under the ground was that dangerous. We would have had some disaster in the modern era where the coal caught fire under ground. This has in fact happened, there is a town in the NE US that had to be abandoned due to this.....But it caused no problems for anyone other than the unfortunate townspeople.

Its in Pennsylvania, and has burned for many years, so then, if they have this in the bag, why have we NEVER heard demands that they go to any extreme to put out the one there, due to it's horrible killing off of Polar Bears and melting ice? The whole argument is stupid, and always breaks down at some point. Gore and his corrupt generation of the very thing he keeps hawking to the unwashed masses, now underground coal fires millions of years ago killing off almost all life, yet the same thing today is, well, bleh....

When I was about 10, I got a huge stack of PS and some PMs from my uncle from the early 60s and maybe even the late 50s. I read them all voraciously. The predictions were entertaining. We subscribed sometime after, and I read them currently in the late 70s/80s. They had interesting data and ideas, decent car reviews, not the politics and just incorrect information as now. Too bad. Another pile of weak-minded, crap to entertain people who can’t use hand tools or understand basic physics.

Things go extinct all the time. New species are discovered every day. Nature's see-saw.

Survival-fit lifeforms adapt to changing conditions. Humans evolved to a certain environmental range of heat/humidity/digestion. Adapting builds intelligence. Intelligence builds adapting skills, from bio-engineering to nano-engineering to planetary engineering. Some humans are just a little late in their cognitive development and a little early in believing they're canaries in a coal mine.

Glad to see y'all having fun with this subject.
