On Specialization and Psychotics

Although, I do NOT totally agree with the author of this piece, I have often observed a problem with "Extreme" specialization.

I thought the comparison, although extreme, was apt.

"But specialization is a two-edged sword. While it has (thus far) led to technological development, it has also left Western man increasingly devoid of a mature perception of reality outside his area of expertise, and unable to articulate how his particular specialty relates to the whole."

[Seeing how one's creation fits within the thick of it is an important observation only made by the mind and being, for all intent and purpose, compartmentalized, how would one know how his creation will ultimately integrate into the whole.]

As Richard Weaver argued in Ideas Have Consequences, the modern specialist shares his myopia with a rather unfortunate figure—the psychotic:

"“It has been remarked that when one passes among the patients of the psychiatric ward, he encounters among the several sufferers every aspect of normal personality in morbid exaggeration... As one passes through the modern centers of enterprise and of higher learning, he is met with similar autonomies of development. The scientist, the technician, the scholar, who have left the One for the Many are puffed up with vanity over their ability to describe precisely some minute portion of the world. Men so obsessed with fragments can no more be reasoned with than other psychotics.”"

[No matter What one specializes in, everyone should have well rounded, time tested principally based education to go with it.]

I'll save you a definition search: Pointillism: : the theory or practice in art of applying small strokes or dots of color to a surface so that from a distance they blend together.

Interesting factoid. In 4 color Printing, each color is aligned via those dots...

In large part, Extreme Political ideologies are a form of compartmentalization as well...but often, one that cannot be reconciled with facts and truth.

    Hi OUC,
From Robert A Heinlein "Specialization is for insects.".
Specialization is why 97% of Scientists believe in AGW , most do not have a clue because they don't know anything beyond their field and they just mimic the falsified data with out question. Why? because they don't what question to ask.
