The theory (proven with hndreds of samples across North America, europe and the Middle East), called for a 10-20KM comet to have broken up on entry, the largest pieces impacting the NA Ice sheet in Canada in several spots, the rapid melt causing the scablands and Columbia Gorge, as well as the east coast deluge and was also responsible for the whole flood myth, because of tsunamis caused by impacts all over of large pieces. It would have cause enough dust, plus the fresh water infusion, that caused the Younger Dryas to plod on another 2000 years, as well as kill off several civilizations, and the melt cause water levels to rise worldwide, "sinking" the civilizations they find today, such as the ones of Okinawa.

See above for the basic outline, the pieces breaking off may have been a mix of ice and rock, making it entirely possible that fires started in some parts of the world, and there was an arc of impacts from North America to the Middle East.

I believe wiggys is referencing the tendancy for mainstream science to just sort of make up an idea, and poo poo the ones they don't, even if the facts can be had to support them, kinda like politicians do, with making up a term to castigate those that do not sign up for the latest fantasies.
