This part kills me: "‘Julia,’ a hypothetical American woman, is shown to be independent from birth to death. She needs no husband, no father or mother, no connection with adult children in her old age. None of these people are necessary to her survival and flourishing, and none of these people are obligated to her for their survival or flourishing. The ad-campaign shows that, with a bit of government help, she is more independent than anyone has ever been able to be." Ha...Julia was independent...with a BIT of government help?? Wow! I guess that makes me MEGA independent...and practically a freak of some kind.

Yes. And how about the logical converse? An individual whose parent's gave him a good start in life is not independent.

Yeah...God forbid any of us have parents who set good solid examples of honesty, being responsible, thinking ahead, making good choices, learning from your mistakes and not making the same mistake twice, work hard and if it's not enough then work harder, use your head and figure out the solutions to your problems, and NEVER ever be somebody else's burden, carry your own weight and live within your means, know the difference between a want and a need. When I moved out of my parents house my Dad said to me on the way out, "When you move out, you don't come back." and I TOTALLY respected him for that because the only way to BE independent is if you KNOW there is NO safety net to pick up your slack. Your failure is your own. However the current mentality is if I mess up EVERYthing I can just bail on it all and go on assistance, I won't be hungry I won't be homeless, no matter WHAT mess I make somebody (the government...tax payers) will take care of me. People today aren't REALLY allowed to fail, not to the point that would give them some drive to strive and work hard to be something more. The poor are too comfortable and currently have no risk of losing that comfort. And so it continues, at the cost of us hard working earners. And that's my rant for today.
