Another "Giant Step" toward energy independence and increased national Security.
The more energy we produce for ourselves rather than import from those who, to put it mildly, don't like us, the better off we are.
This also increases the job markets. All good things.

    Drill baby,drill.
If we can produce what we use,
Our national security is benefitted two fold : reduces Middle East importance and
Provides Economic security protected from disruption to supply.
Any argument contrary ignores the fact that this resource is extracted from the earths crust somewhere and we all use it one way or an other. I don't think green peaces ships are paddled. It's Environazi's earth first , sacrifice the people so future people can see the wilderness as untouched?
Of course people first should be The motto for that vision to happen.

It was no surprise that energy exploration under Obama came to a screeching halt, as many permits were revoked and almost zero new permits were granted. (All new energy production was done on private land.) Obama bragged numerous times about how it was his purpose in life to shut down energy production in the United States. It's a huge boon to business and consumers alike that his policies are being rescinded and America is being encouraged to use its wealth!

One point in the article that should also be noted is the reference to the Deepwater Horizon incident. That incident was a direct result of Obama-era inspectors pointedly not performing the safety inspections on a rig that inspectors under Bush had cited numerous times. It was a disaster that was preventable but which was exploited for ideology.

The Governor of Florida, (MY State) while a big Trump supporter is vehemently against this. Why? Because of our precious beaches. Some of the world's best beaches lie along the panhandle and the lower Gulf coast which includes Clearwater Beach annually ranked in the top ten of the world's beaches and often number 1.Because of that many millions find themselves in the Florida treasury from the tourist trade, which except for January and February keep the money coming in.It is bad enough dealing with hurricanes which decimate the sugar-like sand an oil spill could devastate their greatest source of income -- the tourist dollar. The money filters down through Hotels, restaurants souvenir shops, tips, car rentals and on and on. So should it be what is good for the state or what is good for the country? Put like that, there's really no argument. Add to that the likelihood of no spill with modern technology and the Gov's stance is purely political for show..

What will this Offshore Drilling have on Marine Ecosystems and Wildlife? Many Arctic species are endemic to this region, meaning that they cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The painful sounds from drilling, whales may avoid normal feeding and breeding grounds. Further studies show that chronic leakages from oil rigs in the Arctic can cause contamination of sediments and organisms living nearby.
Would instead the natural gases present in the Arctic not provide the world with much-needed resources?
"The Arctic is the air conditioner and the refrigerator of the planet and what happens here affect all of us," says Kumi Naidoo in this interview with Bill Moyers. Including people outside of the USA!

Anyone on here from Tennessee? I'm retiring soon - the low/zero taxes on retirement income there is definitely attractive, but I'm also a big-game hunter - not sure what there is to do around there - but having to travel farther for an occasional elk hunt is a lot cheaper than paying a lot of taxes.

This will be opposed by governors of every coastal state affected.

It's a wild dream, but one can always wish that future Governors will be elected by those positively impacted by offshore drilling (nearly everyone).

Of course, that assumes many voters still know how to use the logical side of their brains.

Not in CA, OR, WA, or the east coast from NC north. So there might be an energy boom in SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, TX.

Actually, 6 leases became available off Southern California.

There are actually a lot of oil wells in California - quite contrary to what one would think. Even downtown Los Angeles has hundreds or thousands, they have buildings around them or are camouflaged in some way.

Santa Barbara had a massive spill in the 70s and that shut down off-shore here. Reagan was President not long after, and had been Governor of California prior - and he lived in Santa Barbara - so use your imagination on “how” the lockdown became so tight. The Kennedy’s love air power - just not off Nantucket.. Bush’ies are not fans of it either off Kennebunkport.

They became available but my post is a prediction that the state governments will try to stop it if they can. I will be surprised if CA allows the development without a fight, won't you?

Liberals know no limits when it comes to 'revenue enhancement'.

The NIMBY groups will fight tooth & nail, of course, but the extraction fees & taxes are probably very attractive to the California government. An open secret of California's broken budget is that it "chooses" to cover groups not allowed under Medicaid - specifically, illegal immigrants. The cost of providing health coverage without the federal reimbursement for illegals is $4.2 billion PER MONTH. The state's general fund is around $120 billion annually, $50+/- billion is soaked up by Medi-Cal - mostly for that program.

They just raised car registration another $175 a year, so most of us with nice pickup trucks are going to be looking at over $1000 for our registration tax, on top of $800 / month for property taxes for a typical house, and about 10% income tax. I think they may have finally broke the camel's back with the taxes... the few GOP governor candidates that are starting to surface now are not trying to be Schwarzenegger-esque democrat-lite anymore, they seem to be openly conservative.

I am curious, how far out does state jurisdiction go?
Does federal jurisdiction go out further?
I may be out of date- but was it 3 miles, 12 miles?

According to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, states are limited to control of no more than 3 miles offshore, while Federal control extends to 200 miles offshore ( https://www.boem.gov/Federal-Offshore... ). From that I would assume drilling could take place beyond the 3 mile state control limit. Of course that doesn't mean that some states won't try to find a liberal judge somewhere that will declare states have eminent domain over all offshore waters.

As always there is more to it than existing laws and jurisdiction distance. It is mostly political, with lobbying and backroom pressure and deals to determine what the policies will be.
