For years my opinion has always been that when you put a modifier in front of a label, you are the modifier first.

That was my big issue with George W Bush. When he labelled himself as a compassionate conservative that told me he was more worried about compassion than conservatism.

African Americans - if they insist on the label they care more about the African bit than the American bit

Native American - care more about the tribe than the country. Although at least in this case this is by design. Our government segregated them and made the reservations sovereign. So that isn't really surprising.

In every case the modifier ahead of the label is their primary focus.

So for a Muslim American, the Muslim bit has primacy.

It's okay to lie about these things (to NONE muslims) so I'm sure the number is much higher than half. I'd say 99.999% are muslim first and foremost by far.
