Just following the financial crisis, when EBT users were snugly still fixed up, thousands upon thousands of entrepreneurs watched their businesses dry up seemingly over night. They would not qualify for EBT, they would go through the process of firing workers, selling their assets, losing their homes. They had no one to ask for help save family and friends. Your card doesn't work? ask for a job.

My brother went to our local supermarket today to pick up lunch. The woman in front of him was attempting to use her EBT card. She was furious that it was not working and insisted that a manager come over to help. He calmly explained that she had tried it too many times and that she was now "locked"out. She said that she would pay cash but didn't like it! My brother said that clearly the pop and reeses cups she was buying must have been too important for her to wait til the card worked.
