Is it common to "fire" a general? I honestly don't know. I thought the military would just quietly transfer them.

Actually, yes, they do fire them. Back in the bad old days of SAC (Supreme Air Command), they had a General Smith whose nickname was "Sundown". He would descend on a base and order a surprise ORI (Operational Readiness Inspection). If the results were less than satisfactory, the wing commander (usually a Colonel or BG) was told, "You're fired. Be off this base by sundown." They are not as peremptory today but, yes, they do fire them. Witness what happened at Lackland AFB in San Antonio over the sexual misconduct of some of the TIs vis-à-vis the recruits. That also was a two star, if I remember correctly.
