My wife wanted to do something special last year and made me a pumpkin pie cheescake. She doesn't like to cook but she worked hard and followed the recipe to the letter. After putting it in the oven Giant Eagle called and said the pie mix she bought had been recalled and she should not use it. As she heard those words the timer went off indicating the pie was done. She placed it in the garbage, went and got all new stuff and made it again. That was special and it tasted great.

To point 3. I have heard some say that WWI and WWII are the same war with a 20 year cease fire. I believe Italy is the only one to change sides. Had there have been a clear winner in WWI the devastation of WWII may have been avoided. Great points Kh.

so many contributing factors to WWII.
1.crippling debt to Germany under Treaty of Versailles
2. the idea of self-determination-inherently tribalistic- that every ethnic group gets their own government/country-completely antagonistic to the idea of the American Revolution-anti-Man's rights, anti-reason and Wilson pushed this heavily.
3. No one actually "won" WWI. wars are never settled unless there is a clear victor. The victor should be a philosophical basis. the issues regarding the Russia break-up are still unresolved.

The over-arching point made in your beautifully written comments is the south had many options to resolve the problems. They chose a "Don't Tread On Me" policy. the Constitution, when ratified was due in fact to the ability of States to peacefully secede. Half of the states were in disagreement with Northern-driven policy. The fact that this was not a peaceful secession, was on Lincoln's watch.

Stroke or not, I believe like many historians that the measures against Germany after WW1 left the country so utterly defeated it led to an intense desire for a sense of national identity. With a renewed interest in anything related to the ‘volk’, Hitler’s spiels about how proud Germans should be were easily absorbed.
