The comet’s structure, or total environment, includes:
the interior of the nucleus
the surface of the nucleus which morphs as the comet approaches the sun
the coma that emerges from and surrounds the nucleus
the tails that eventually trail behind the comet as it approaches the sun.
The nucleus
When far from the sun, comets are usually big, asymmetrical chunks of ice mixed with dust or rock, typically less than ten miles across. This is the comet's nucleus. Scientists used to think that it was solid and firm, but NASA’s Deep Impact mission (2005), in which Rosetta participated, surprised them. They found that the nucleus of comet Tempel-1 was more silicate or dusty than they expected. It was also harder than they expected.

When a comet is in the deep freeze of space, very far from the Sun, it is completely frozen. But when it approaches to within about 140 to 280 million miles (about 225 million to 450 million km) of the sun, its ices begin to sublime . They boil off of the surface or burst out of the interior as jets of gas, carrying dust with them. This spewing gas and dust create a huge "coma" around the nucleus. The coma can grow as large as 60,000 miles (100,000 km) or more in diameter! The nucleus and coma together are the "head" of the comet.
The coma
As the coma grows larger, it becomes an obstacle to the streaming solar wind, creating a bow shock in front of the coma. This bow shock is a bit like the reactive wave that forms off the bow of a ship as it plows against the waves pushing against it. Similarly, the comet “plows” through the solar wind, and this confrontation expands the coma more and more as the comet approaches the sun. As the pressure of the coma begins to equal the pressure of the solar wind, the solar wind and its associated magnetic field lines slow down, compress against the coma, and then stream around the comet, carrying cometary ions and dust with them, eventually forming the comet’s tails.

1.5 billion miles from the sun that is 16 AU are astrological unit. For comparison the Earth is 1AU and Jupiter is 5.3 AU . As the NASA site above misses the max range by over 1 billion miles. The water boils off the surface at that distance. Hmmmm.

Unless of course there is a profit or power motive behind determining a specific outcome. Too much of science, popular anyway, is not empirical and folks like Degrasse have played a role.
Heck, even Al Gore could say that, come to think of it.
Remove that statement from any speaker and it stands on its own very well.

FYI. Sept 2017 CNN)Scientist and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson said Sunday that, in the wake of devastating floods and damage caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, climate change had become so severe that the country "might not be able to recover."
In an interview on CNN's "GPS," Tyson got emotional when Fareed Zakaria asked what he made of Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert's refusal to say whether climate change had been a factor in Hurricanes Harvey or Irma's strength -- despite scientific evidence pointing to the fact that it had made the storms more destructive.
"Fifty inches of rain in Houston!" Tyson exclaimed, adding, "This is a shot across our bow, a hurricane the width of Florida going up the center of Florida!"
"What will it take for people to recognize that a community of scientists are learning objective truths about the natural world and that you can benefit from knowing about it?" he said.
Tyson told Zakaria that he had no patience for those who, as he put it, "cherry pick" scientific studies according to their belief system.
"The press will sometimes find a single paper, and say, 'Oh here's a new truth, if this study holds it.' But an emergent scientific truth, for it to become an objective truth, a truth that is true whether or not you believe in it, it requires more than one scientific paper," he said.
"It requires a whole system of people's research all leaning in the same direction, all pointing to the same consequences," he added. "That's what we have with climate change, as induced by human conduct."
Tyson said he was gravely concerned that by engaging in debates over the existence of climate change, as opposed to discussions on how best to tackle it, the country was wasting valuable time and resources.
"The day two politicians are arguing about whether science is true, it means nothing gets done. Nothing," he said. "It's the beginning of the end of an informed democracy, as I've said many times. What I'd rather happen is you recognize what is scientifically truth, then you have your political debate."
Tyson told Zakaria that he believed that the longer the delay when it comes to responding to the ongoing threat of climate change, the bleaker the outcome. And perhaps, he hazarded, it was already even too late.
"I worry that we might not be able to recover from this because all our greatest cities are on the oceans and water's edges, historically for commerce and transportation," he said.
Reality is truth.

Very good presentation, The lame stream They keep their eyes wide shut. Charged Solar wind interacting at 16 Astronomical units with deep space negative nucleus of a comet creating a cosmic chemistry lab traveling at 26 - 360 miles per second.
I've notice recently that in spite of these revelations, the lamestream marches on with big bangs, dark matters, black holes, gravitational models, nuclear suns and deep fried ice creamed comets...I'm not sure they will ever let go.
The Big Bang where every bit of matter (100,000,000,000 galaxies worth) and energy that ever was could fit on a pin head. No no that is established science, leave it alone
The main problem is that math, which is a descriptive language that can be applied to objective reality is being used as though it is reifyable(? spellling) as some existing reality, as Roger Penrose, say, seems to believe in his The Road to Reality.
They are not even close to dirty snowballs.
Next a comet fires up its comma 1.5 billion miles from the sun just after a massive solar coronal mass ejection occurs. Comets are not supposed to create a comma past 280 million miles. This one is active 1.23 billion miles. Stick with the old tried and true even when obviously not true. That is what the Rossetta Team is doing
As they have the up close probes. If math tells me that a comet is a snow ball and my eyes see that it is rock well take the numbers and $ can them.
Good thing Tom Carvell didn't come up with that theory...we'd have swirled comets.
How did Tom do his business in the bathroom?..just stoop and swirl your hips...that's how.
I wouldn't morn the loss of dark matter nor black holes because as science 'should',.. will not settle but march on to new understandings of reality. That's the part that excites me.
