How I got to Objectivism...
Posted by ICEBverg 12 years, 8 months ago to Philosophy
It is not complicated to explain how I got to know about Ayn Rand's philosophy, but it is curious what I was living in those day that took me further towards objectivism. I must admit that I was innocent, and wanted to be succesful -which is not bad at all-, but i did not have any idea how to... So i got into a bussiness which I did not feell passioned, so I left it.
So, one night, while having nothing to do, I turned my computer on, got to Netflix and there whas it, callingme: Atlas Shrugged I. I had seen it was there, but never whatched it. That night, my life started to change...
I whatched it and I thogth "this is intresting, I have to get deeper", so I look for more info bout the film, and got to the source: Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, which now I'm reading and it really caught me trapped into this new world.
Also I have to say that by the days I discover Rand, I met the love of my life, who shares with me all these ideas -capitalism, individuality, individual rights, self triumph, and all that makes us be "myself" and fight to get our goals.
Now a day, I have a job, I admit that I am an employee, but it's part of a biggest plan that i have for me. I am starting now a bussiness -very interesting- whith other colleagues and we are going to get our goal, becouse we are the best of us.
So that is my story -well, it is just the begining of why I consider myself objectivist.
I have so much more to share... I shall do

Congrats of finding your way to a Gulch and into the world of Objectivism. It's a big step for many of us. I seem to have been one my entire life, but never had a name for it. I remember reading Atlas Shrugged when I was in college in the early 70's - at least I recall checking it out at the library, but apart from a very slight comprehension of the books outline and the name John Galt, not much else remains.
So it was with great surprise and more than a little joy that I eagerly sat back one week a few years ago with the Audible version downloaded onto my Ipod, a full week of vacation and nothing else on my schedule. Surprise that there was so much more in that book than I remembered and joy in the reality that the values I had used to guide my life were reflected in the words I heard narrated to me.
The year was 2008, markets were crashing, my business which was built on people having disposable income was suffering, a new president was telling us all how he was going to spread our wealth around and I was one year away from spending a year and a half of my life fighting with the IRS over my tax returns - which were penny perfect.
For me, being re-exposed to the prose of AS strengthened me for the road ahead. The words of Francisco to Reardon when he tells Reardon that he was there "to give him the words he would need, for the time he would need them" were words I would soon find myself in need of.
And when the time came that I knew that my business had ceased to have the meaning for me that it once held, the time when I knew that the only way forward for me involved locking and closing my doors, selling the building and moving out my tools. Selling the building for $1 less than I had invested in it, just so that I'd not be forced to give one more dollar derived from the effort of my mind to a government that sees me as evil because I think I'm entitled to keep the reaping from the creativity of my mind.
In my case, I became what Ayn Rand called a striker. I no longer work for the benefit of those who seek to feed off my mind. I no longer produce the fruits of my mind for their gratification, only for mine. The handiwork I once made and sold, I now create (for I MUST create) and give/trade to friends for things I need that they create. For the things I must purchase, I earn the required money doing the least creative or inventive work possible.
For me, the adventure that is Objectivism came just in time.
On the other hand, I know it is not a bad thing beeng employee, but it is not always that way as a designer in this environment I move, not always doing what I do, but I really am trying to change it from where I am, doing the best I can, improving as I may.
It is a very competitive market here where I am, and many of the getting-bigger companies do not have real ideas, innovative ideas as for design. This is a comy-paste market, it is not very health. So... I go on doing my best, prpose my ideas. I do not steal, I produce.
Some day, I'm dure, I'll change that, and will be my own boss, and I will take as much risks as necesary.

I suspect your field may suffer in the commercial real estate slump. I think that's ending. It would be good to load up on graphics / ID / graphics for website / etc and switch gears when commercial RE comes back.
I'm just guessing about Environmental Design b/c I don't know anyone in that area. Good luck though. I'm confident you'll find projects you never imagined in the next few years if you talk to enough people in that world. I suspect an RE boom may come in a few years, maybe more, and it will be a fun ride.
Otherwise, I am a bit cofused whit some words and terms that you use, I am not a native englis speaker, and eather am related to design lenguage in english. I'd love you cleare me some things, such as: SLA, RE.
Also, I can give you a little description of what Envirnmental Design (ED) is. Spanish name for it is Diseño Ambiental. It is a complex career, because it is really wide, we can create form interiors to urban spaces, landskape, amogn other things. And as other design specialities, there is a lot of thing to have in mind: color, ligthing, materials, fabrics, green desing, habitability, universal desig, etc...
I'd love to keep in touch and have more words between us. Here I give you a link so you can see a project I have with other colleagues, it is really intesting. It is in spanish, but you can google-translate it easily, as we all know.
We'll keep in touch, I hope.
A pleasure.
