I realize that being from the south at the time when I was working part time/full time summers. Part time because of school. I started at 1.00 per/hr at 15 years of age paying income tax, SS. etc. Worked many jobs for cash before, but actually receiving a paycheck minus government take away's. In one year I was Assistant Manager making $2.50 per/hr when minimum wage was $1.65 per/hr. I was pumping gas at a major company in South Texas until graduation in 1976 then I went into the oilfield in Texas. I remember one thing though. To excel was all on you if you screwed up you could possibly get hurt or hurt someone else so using your head and asking questions never lost me one single red cent. In other words as my father always said use that thing on your shoulders other than a hat rack. I relied on myself to initiate how I would live or not. I knew minimum wage would not suffice my dreams and also at a young age I knew something about this government was not right. I was told about what they call lobbyist's then and that did it. How this entity was subsidized and we all paid for it no matter what the cost. Sadly took me a few years to realize some people could care less about you or even if you were around as long as they got that subsidy. Buffalo NY., Detroit MI., to name a few were those cities I remember where the unions priced themselves out of the workforce. The reason for Buffalo because my biological father worked for GMC and if you did not make $30.00 per/hr then you could not survive. At least that was the mindset. I found out about Detroit in the late 80's early 90's. I was driving through a town named Flint and found out that was where it all started. I always wondered why the big warehouses along I 75 were abandoned until it was explained to me. Yes I realize Detroit, Pontiac, and a few other suburbs did their part, but to just uproot and leave a town to survive on your own like that because the union says we need to make the companies pay for something more than we will do is ridiculous. I see these people now that are of my generation and are retired, but some could care less as long as the union takes care of them. Then I see some who are simply scared to death even though they receive that pension because their minds see what is happening in this country. My question is this "Do the unions really think they can control those illegals who are sifting into this country by giving them jobs at a wage far less than those that have since retired'? And what will those who have those pensions do? Go along with this scheme?

Unions are precisely the problem. Look up the history of the Davis-Bacon act, and you'll find that it is also based on racism.

I think the "Atlas Shrugged - now non-fiction" one might be better. You've got your mechanical engineering [how DOES he hold up the world, anyhow?], your "non-fiction" to point out relevance to the real world, your "now" to show the students that it's current, not a zillion [or 50] years ago - and it's black and white, which leads you to a discussion about complete saturation and complete absence....and, rather than being a question, it leads the students to ask questions.

Students already know this - they will learn better [faster, more completely, in better temper, etc.] if you lead them to invent algebra rather than trying to transfer it from your brain to theirs. Give them a problem to solve which can ONLY be solved algebraically - and challenge them to solve it.

While you hate the message, you gotta love the messenger. I suppose nowadays with short attention spans, abominable ignorance, and liberal teachers drumming their mantras into children's heads from age six to twenty-one,
a two minute humorous satire is about the only way to get a message across. Most likely that is why comedians seem to have more political clout than pundits. It's a wonder that Disney doesn't sue the crap out of them, since they are so jealous of their copyrights. Probably is a reflection of their politics. If it is, I would wonder how many minimum wage earners are on their payrolls, not to mention freebie interns.
