How much individual freedom is possible?

When you consider the whole earth, are we as free as we have ever been and considering everyone, as free as possible at this point in time. In every country, there are many people that are unprepared to be free, some that can never be free enough and everything in between. What will it take to achieve complete individual freedom and how many generations?

It is not a difference in process, you are correct - only payload. It's just been in use by religious philosophies for a very long time. There is one major catch to the whole process, however, and that is based on the philosophical tenet of the freedom of the individual to choose their own destiny. With philosophies based on coercion (such as Islam or communism) no such underlying tenet is professed.

True, but I don't see those false premises going away any time soon either, particularly collectivism and statism. Altruism is a false premise that we might be able to convince many non-Objectivists toward the Objectivist path.

Kind of sounds a bit like proselytizing for a religion there! That may be a reason for why Objectivism has such a hard time spreading through society. The original inner circle of Rand's was close to being a cult and turned off many possible new students of Objectivism with its purges and excommunications along with cancellations of subscriptions to the Objectivist for asking a question that was not proper.
It didn't take with my six siblings, one whom thought that Atlas Shrugged was a story about a bunch (the heroes) of people who thought they were better than the rest and thus should exploit them.

There are always criminals and power seekers. They do not dictate a social system without general acceptance of false premises of altruism, collectivism and statism.

Education is not "guessing" or acceptance on "faith".

It is false that "one must respect the choice to remain in slavery", whether or not it includes imposition of controls on all of us.

Modern "liberals" confuse political freedom with racial and ethnic entitlements, and with technological improvements in spite of the increasing statism,

Thanks to viro preservationist pressure groups you can't even get a permit to do a lot of normal activities on your own land, sometimes when you can you have to pay expensive "mitigation fees", and sometimes you can't keep it at all because the preservationists arrange for government agencies like the National Park Service or US Fish and Wildlife take it outright through eminent domain.

many years ago when I was in my late 20's I came across a guy in theif river falls mn in his mid 20's. he left their at about 18 and was a merchant marine, worked in the theater in London and was now back in a town of 15000, arcticat was the primary employer. he was significantly more worldly and sophisticated than those around him. what I noted was that he was as free as can be because his mind was able to allow him to do what ever he wanted. the point being you are free if you want to be regardless of the government or any other person in existence that might want to control you. you should know or understand that the name sake of this web site AYN RAND was as free as can be because NOBODY could control her. she did as she pleased her whole life and set an example that in my opinion should be followed by all who chose to follow her. I proudly say I have to the best of my ability. a free mind can not be caged.

Man alone can not attain complete individual freedom. Not unless he can go off in the wilderness away from everyone else and do his own thing. When two or more individuals get together there has to be some rule, it's just the nature of man. I'm not necessarily religious and it doesn't even matter if I believe in God or not. As long as we believe in the concept(s) of God we can probably survive around others and still maximize our individual freedom. The more of us there are in our society, the harder it gets. That's what's so great about living in a small podunk town. (wow, I even spelled "podunk" correctly.)

True individual freedom will only be possible when:

Everyone becomes a full functioning Conscious Human being (Conscience introspection of self) with a shared moral compass based upon time tested truths, ( that level would have to be beyond the present 6 theoretical models-Spiral Dynamics) AND the Most profound respect for private property, (the basic unit of which starts with the individual) not to mention guided by something like the "Prime Law".
[you can yahoo Mark Hamilton's or The twelve visions party to view the Prime Law]

We may NEVER achieve it although we are certainly capable of doing so.

First...we'd have to fix "Stupid" or what I call...antilectuals and parasitical humanoids.

Oh...caveman was probably the most free...maybe even the nomadic people prior to cities and large civilizations.

I agree that we are living in an AS world minus Galt's Gulch. I frequently blame the educators for teaching children not to think for themselves but rather to act on their feelings. But deep down I realize that it is the philosophers who determine the course of history. The ideas of Locke and Jefferson and Rand have been and are being overwhelmed by those of Kant and Marx and their stooges. All we can do is continue broadcasting Objectivism, Individual Rights, and limited government until many listen and heed or until the ship sinks.

A long time ago as a teenager I read some Heinlein. .
A month ago me age 70 dino had Netflix send me Starship Troopers 3: Marauder for a second time since first seeing it about five years ago. That movie is a hoot!
Found out via Netflix that Starship 2: Hero of the Federation is a big time STINKER.
I have the DVD of the first Starship Troopers mostly due to getting a big kick out of all the humorous fascist propaganda (as in #3).
In number #3 I really loved how distant descending rescuing trooper vehicles formed a halo around a fervently praying Christian's head.

This morning I was listening to a Yaron Brook soundbite posted on Twitter. It was from his show on The Blaze but what I liked was the advertising. It was being sponsored by Everbrook Academy located in Arlington, VA. This is a PRESCHOOL!!! infant to kindergarten. They have classes in science and engineering!!!! I know it isn't much but it gives one hope.

At the present time, the mature adulthood of the human race is set in a future far beyond our ability to see it. Without that maturity, it will not be possible for humanity to enjoy complete freedom. It would require an entirely different educational methodology, in which a rational philosophy is the primary subject. And then, of course, adult examples of rationality in terms of the actions of the populace.Rand's Utopia? In today's world, there may not be a wall high enough to protect it from the insanity surrounding it.

Short answer: as much as we want and are willing to defend. The longer answer addresses both of these questions.

What does an individual want? One can not adopt a policy or philosophy which one does not have familiarity with. Therefore there must be someone who has familiarity with the desired philosophy who is desirous of camaraderie in said philosophy. An examination of the motivations for promulgation of of the philosophy is certainly a worthy study but may be better reserved for its own thread. Regardless, one who is familiar with the philosophy must then teach (or sell) it to others.

Those to whom the philosophy is peddled must come to an estimation of the effects of that philosophy upon their lives. They have to guess or take on faith that adoption of that philosophy will indeed better their circumstances during its implementation phase. They may not see the payoffs immediately, so having someone there to guide them through the adoption phase may indeed be critical to the expansion of the philosophy.

Last comes defense. Once a philosophy is adopted, one must not only live the philosophy, but defend it against attack or encroachment. That may mean merely an intellectual defense, but could certainly extend to a physical defense against aggressors of competing philosophies. This means not only that the defender must have the means of defense - both intellectual and physical - but the conviction of soul that the defense is worthy and/or moral.

A note about those who choose not to adopt the philosophy: they will have made a choice. If one values the principle of individual freedom, one must respect the choice to remain in slavery even though we may disagree with the choice. But we must also allow for the decision to change one's mind later down the road, and such as who do should find an extended arm.

Let's just concentrate on the US where freedom has diminished but where our founding principles could enable us to get more back.

Liberty is a group thing, basically self-rule, but in a sociatal sense. Freedom is an individual thing. (Like in the Navy sailors get to go on liberty, but they are certainly not free.) A person has to learn to be free, i.e., responsible for their self. Otherwise its like uncapping a bottle of soda--suddenly released with no notion of how to act. Of course in a society this leads to rules and regulation being forced upon them by others--a slippery slope. Maybe that's why stories about the old "mountain men" are popular-- solitary individuals free to live or die by their own actions--subject only to the laws of nature.

Real freedom requires the ability to be self reliant. The more you can do for yourself, the more freedom you have. However, as freedom increases, so does risk. Medical issues, for instance, require either lots of health care knowledge (alternatives to conventional medicine, natural non-prescription medications, trauma kits, etc.), or relying on the medical community, and relinquishing some freedom to its dictates. Even without an oppressive government, interaction with society inevitably leads to sacrifice of absolute freedom.

You can't even do things on or with your own land now without several permits, fees, inspections. This was not always the case and it gets worse every time they pass a new regulation or ordinance.

Me dino science fiction predicts that centuries from now like-minded freedom-loving people inspired by our Founding Fathers will inhabit an earth-like planet in the Goldilocks Zone of another star system.
My guess is that they shall enjoy an utopia of individual freedom for about 150 years before they begin to screw it up. In about 150 years more it will be like the USA is today.
Looters and moochers shall abound with libtard mental disorders.
If that civilization is a colony tied to some Federation or so-called interstellar republic who wants to start from scratch with a USA of a forefathers, dream on.
Or rebel by writing a Declaration Of Independence in the futuristic historical year of 17767.
The red star ships are coming!

Unfortunately, many have read and many have ignored. Our current society seems to have used the dystopia in Atlas Shrugged as its model for existence.
