I saw this earlier. I won't speak to Seinfeld because I was always uncomfortable watching it. I couldn't root for anyone, I guess. I like The Big Bang Theory when I just need to check out to a show. My husband can't take it-to the point he would leave the room if it was on. I used to have the same reaction when my little brother watched a Roadrunner cartoon. My husband, a physicist, engineer and IP attorney, spends every day with inventors, inventions, scientists and bemoans the change in our society from a time when great scientists and inventors were true heroes. If you saw a movie about Edison or Graham Bell or even Lindbergh-you weren't seeing any quirky social issues put up there right along with their achievements. Over the years this has changed. The iconic nutty professor or evil scientist replaces the value of great achievement. But this author did such a good job of telling me why I like Big Bang Theory, I don't have to feel uncomfortable. Is the comedy of our times just noise or pure entertainment? Does it shape our thoughts and hone our cynicism? In the end, as clever as clever writing can be, would we laugh at a sitcom staged around a great philosophical thinker and a group of people living their lives and trying to further the work of Objectivism? I'd leave the room.
