I expect lots of #2 when dealing with government.

One of the most hilarious passages I read was in the book Dave Barry Slept Here when he talked about the Bill that mandated low-flow toilets. He used it as an example of an "Act of Congress" - likened to using said facility. My wife and I joke about it from time to time when the call of Nature is too strong to avoid, but more especially when it takes two or three flushes to take care of the results. ;)

Low flow toilets created a black market in discarded high flow toilets among remodeling contractors in Virginia. The state government responded by creating toilet inspectors who inspected remodeling jobs to insure the old toilets were removed and smashed.

It's the crony capitalism and political paybacks that are pervasive in government. My dad lived it as a civilian working for the Navy dept in Washington DC twenty years ago. He researched out and made recommendations for cost effective equipment. The then senator from Texas said, no, we will support Texas Instruments and give the contact to them costing the Navy millions more. My dad was livid. The senator said to him, "its only a few million." My dad responded "then why don't you pay the difference out of your pocket." No answer - he just walked away.
As far as I am concerned they are all crooks in Congress until proven otherwise.

Reminds me of what a wealthy man once told me over 50 years ago, if you want to make a lot of money quickly do a government contract job where you can add on a higher profit margin than you can possibly get in the private sector and then adjust the price up as the job goes along citing compliance and other factors and the government will go along with it. I never took him up on it but perhaps I should have, I might be able to afford Obamacare now.

    Typical government efficiency.

However, the note about " ...$539K for a nearby 6 bedroom house..." in NYC is a fabrication. detracting from the point. The author needs to learn the difference between making a clear defensible, logical point, and inciting a willing audience.

My first pointing with my right forefinger was to the unions, second pointing goes to kickbacks and third to political contributions...the rest can be chalked up to criminality and stupidity...we'll see how long this abortion lasts compared to the one in Bryant park.

Hey, it ain't their money. The rules are there mainly to help them (government workers) maintain their jobs. Unfortunately that is the mentality of most government employees today. I still think successful people should volunteer to "serve the people", especially in the leadership positions. Thinking about that, Trump is effectively doing that, giving his financial entitlement of the job away. So, he sure can't be doing it for the fame or fortune, or to try to destroy the country. I think the Romey's too would have donated the pay just to "serve".

I have floated several initiatives I think would serve to curb some level of spending in our nations capital, and the more I think about it, I would like to see the President's salary eliminated entirely. He and his family have their every need catered to including food, transportation, recreation, and security from the time he/she becomes elected to even far past the time they are out of office. And judging by the book deals and speaking engagements, it isn't as if they don't have a lucrative future ahead of them.

The other initiative I would float is to require all Senators and Congressmen and their staffs to be paid for by their respective States. You can bet this would trim some things down substantially and would eliminate the ability of Congress to vote itself monetary perks - including healthcare. It would also get rid of this ridiculous notion that Congressmen with some sort of tenure get benefits for life. The Founding Fathers went back to their homes, their fields, and their businesses even after adjourning a session. I see no reason why elected officials should be able to vote for themselves luxurious pension packages.

From the article: "Government spends more because every decision is tied up in endless rules."

That's one impetus for absurd spending. The main reason, IMHO, is zero consequences for the decision makers. Their thought is, "Hell, I'll never be held accountable, I'll never suffer any consequences for allowing, encouraging, tolerating this shit, so, what the hell .... let's do it." THEY DO IT BECAUSE THEY CAN. PERIOD.

Well said. In business, decisions have implications and accountability which are directly reflected in one's earnings and therefore livelihood. In business, one makes more profits by producing better products, operating more efficiently, or selling at lower prices than one's competitors. None of these factors come to bear when dealing with government initiatives.

I think one of the primary reasons we struggle so badly (and the struggle becomes even worse as government size increases) is precisely because of this perverse incentive structure: the only way that a government bureaucrat gets more money is to increase the size of his/her budget, and the only way they can do that is to justify their higher year-over-year spending by fudging the numbers. The problem we've grown into now is that the level of fudge has grown (as have the strict rules and regulations which force ever-increasing costs for compliance) and so we now have the problem where every government cost outstrips by a wide margin what could be accomplished by the private sector.

Right. As to the "spend it all to get more" syndrome, I suggest Trump issue an order that says, in effect, "All departments of all agencies that use discretionary spending rules will have their budgets cut 10% per year while I am President. Deal with it."

I will bet if we follow the money there is a very happy political crony of one of our fine representatives. This likely cost around $20-30K but they tested the toilets by flushing millions down the drain and into the pockets of their pals.

There are many internet refs to this, for example-
    https://www.louderwithcrowder.com/tor...

" The city insisted on handling the problem as all government entities do:
with twiddling thumbs and setting stacks of cash aflame.
Then they sit back and wonder why everyone hates them."

For those with my odd sense of humor, you can amuse yourself by imaging where the $65,000 and up money will go-
rake-offs, union official owned sub-contracting companies, special affirmative action employees, overtime for city staff, equal opportunity consultants, environmental, health and safety studies. ..

Without sending me lots of flack... may I suggest you re-read "The Art of the Deal" and The Donald's confrontation with NYC and the Mayor thereof regarding the Rockerfeller Ice Rink? They did the same thing back then, and probably laid the first brick on the road to his Presidency. Were there 'better candidates'? None with his talent for accomplishment...

Haven't read The Art of the Deal. I may get around to it, but my current reading includes Winston Churchill's complete (six-volume) history of WW II. It seems with Russia's latest moves it might be prudent to see the similarities.

    So....what else is new?
I checked with a couple of builder friends. They were pretty solid on around $50,000 for a 4 seater and then only that much because they assume greater regulations than home building. So, all it is, is $2,950,000.00 over price which could have been saved by jobbing it out.

With over 30 years of dealing with the government, I'm rarely if ever successful in correcting their mistakes. Don't kid yourself. They don't care. Even when you are innocent, when they are done with you, you feel like you were punished as if you were guilty. They can make your life miserable, and there is nothing you can do about it. Learn all the law you can, and you might survive.

I am so done with government. I just want none of the benefits of our current government, and want to make no "contributions to it". Looks like we are stuck with obamacare morphing into medicaid for everyone, with declining health care, and the destruction of the dollar due to deficit spending. Ayn Rand was right. Once the ideas of statism are entrenched, the future path is determined. Venezuela, here we come as our wealth is slowly depleted.

I think john is a very bright fellow but alas he seems not to get the point, you can not beat city hall. I have had many dealings with government (civil servants) employees and long ago decided if I am to sell to the government it will be via GSA contract holders. john has made a career exposing the lunacy of how government functions but with out a doubt everything he has exposed has NOT changed. just think of what he does as a joke and smile.
