I am the owner of, and lead craftsmen for Dogwood Custom Knives. Everything I make comes from my mind and is built by my hands for the benefit of my self. From time to time it may become apparent that the written word is not my strongest suit. I am dyslexic, but not ignorant, pleas let me know should I ever need to clarify something I have posted.

    Welcome Dan and being dyslexic is a good thing. You think differently and are hands on. I know, my son is also. Can't wait to see your pics.

      Are you familiar with the book "the gift of dyslexia" by Ron Davis. I found it useful as a theoretical guide rather then a how to book, but it was an interesting approach. this is a subject I have some passion about, if a first hand adult opinion will ever help pleas let me know. My son is dyslexic and I am amazed at how many teachers know nothing about it.

    Yes Dan, I am very familiar with Ron Davis' book. Actually have a testimonial for the book. He was in a private school and 2nd grade proved to be a real struggle. I had him privately tested over that summer break and yes, he had dyslexia, which I had already figured out. So, I put him in public school, with his written diagnosis by a nationally certified psycologist and he repeated 2nd grade. By 5th grade, I was called in for a conference, where I was told he did not have dyslexia, he was ADHD and needed to be on drugs and even recommended the kind of drugs he should take. I told them what I thought of them and stormed out of the meeting. That's when I searched and found Ron Davis' book and found a person who teaches the techniques in a near by state. So he spent 5 days with Diane, and started 6th grade with no problems. Graduated from a Vocational High School last year with a 3.75 GPA and just finished reading Atlas Shrugged at 20 yrs old. Just another example of our public school systems ineptness. Thank You for the advise and your knives look great. I own a restaurant, so may be doing business with you.

      My parents had to threaten the local school board with a law suit to keep me out of an "special needs school" as that at the time dyslexia was considered a form of "retardation. I was functional illiterate in 7th grade and struggled in everything academic. when I was 16 I heard an interview with Ron Davis on the radio one morning, I just pulled over and sat on the side of the road lessoning. when I got home I walked into the kitchen and told my parents "this guy gets it, he was talking about me" long story short my parents helped a tutor I had been working with get formal training with Ron and by my junior year I was in the advanced placement class. I am glad things are working well for your son, he is lucky that you knew what to look for and wear willing to sacrifice all that t took to get him the training he needed.

    I like your steel options. Do you forge your own steel? If so, how many times do you fold the carbon steel?

      I do some forging for fun but stock removal is so much more efficient that it is what I stick to . I use hot rolled 0-1 tool steel for my carbon work. It is compressed with i believe 10 ton roles in the foundry to give it density given that and its consistent structure I do not need to fold it. I do have a guy that I get "demass" steel from but it's value is more decorative.
