Word Meme Dictionary
This is a sample of a new interactive dictionary we're going to post. We'll be putting out the word memes and accepting any and all "definitions or explanations"...but you must keep the meme intact...no changes. Memes may be submitted for the dictionary but it will be unlike a traditional wiki. Please let us know what you think of both the idea and the sample content. We're big girls and our little emotional hearts will not be shattered by criticism :-)...sorry, I live in Portlandia...it's kind of a standard caveat you have to add here.

A meme as I understand it is an idea or topic or thought that seems to spread through the culture or populace rapidly by conversation or other media(net). Some have likened a meme to be the reason many inventions have occured simultaneously.
No one else will ever be able to give you what you want.
No mistake is fatal unless you make it so.
Half of getting what you want is knowing what you must give up to get it.

Here are a few, for entertainment:
• All men are created unequal.
o "Intermission: Excerpts from the Notebooks of Lazarus Long", p. 243
• It may be better to be a live jackal than a dead lion, but it is better still to be a live lion. And usually easier.
o "Intermission: Excerpts from the Notebooks of Lazarus Long", p. 243
• One man's theology is another man's belly laugh.
o "Intermission: Excerpts from the Notebooks of Lazarus Long", p. 243
• Men rarely (if ever) manage to dream up a god superior to themselves. Most gods have the manners and morals of a spoiled child.
o "Intermission: Excerpts from the Notebooks of Lazarus Long", pp. 243-244
• A woman is not property, and husbands who think otherwise are living in a dreamworld.
o "Intermission: Excerpts from the Notebooks of Lazarus Long", p. 245
• A zygote is a gamete's way of producing more gametes. This may be the purpose of the universe.
o "Intermission: Excerpts from the Notebooks of Lazarus Long", p. 245
• Democracy is based on the assumption that a million men are wiser than one man. How's that again? I missed something.
o "Intermission: Excerpts from the Notebooks of Lazarus Long", p. 246
• Autocracy is based on the assumption that one man is wiser than a million men. Let's play that over again, too. Who decides?
o "Intermission: Excerpts from the Notebooks of Lazarus Long", p. 246
• What are the facts? Again and again and again — what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore divine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell," avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history" — what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your single clue. Get the facts!

No collection of witty sayings should be compiled without knowing the existence of this resource, because it is what many of us will instantly think of, especially when the topic of Gulch philosophy memes is introduced. I do not know how you would prefer to handle the fact of their existence. Certainly you don't want to unknowingly quote one of them without addressing the fact that they are taken from a copyrighted book. Do you want to allude to them? Get permission from the Heinlein estate to include your favorites? This is up to you.
Just FYI, they are fun to read.

Fault-finders divert attention from themselves.

Macintosh) I like your Gulch contributions.....
Giggle! Giggle! Snicker!
I suppose it's too late to resist the distortion of the meaning of the word "meme" from its original definition by Richard Dawkins as the brain's software, the building blocks of consciousness and the formation of ideas, in parallel with genes as the building blocks of the physical machinery.
The aphorisms and definitions you want to collect here are actually meme composites, as in Ayn Rand's concept formation theory. The Internet has grabbed and run with the word "meme" to represent any notion or fad or trend or opinion as a whole. Memes have become a kind of meta-meme by the natural process of how things grow, good cells as well as tumors. Let's see who can tell the difference.
