Something tells me one would have to be an idiot to sign a petition on the White House website to secede. Nothing like putting your name on a hit list for the Obama administration!

I don't think the point is to secede, although the loyalists who started the Revolutionary war did not think they were going to secede either.

The point, however, is to restore our state sovereignty, and the power of the 10th ammendment. I would also hope we would work with the other governors and repeal the 17th ammendment. Until the senate starts representing the states again, which was the purpose of the senate, nothing will change.

The house represents the people and the senate the welfare of their state. Right now the senate represents no one except their own personal interests.

: ), no, no Bush impressions. BTW, I do know how to pronounce "nuclear." I hope there isn't any violence because citizens will have to encounter U.S. military troops. The troops will put them down in a matter of minutes.

If the people of Texas get serious about this, there WILL be violence. And the federal troops will not have it as easy as you think.

For one thing, a significant portion of the US military won't fire on a fellow citizen. But they "might" just see to it that an "orificer" or two takes some, uh, "friendly fire"...

Also, there will be a large number of well-trained EX-military personnel on the other side, some of them recently separated. Others will have just simply deserted... They will know the tactics and strategy that will be used against them, and will be ready...

There'll be drones... on both sides. And anti-aircraft batteries... on both sides. Materiel will "disappear" from former US bases all over Texas.

It won't be a pretty sight. And I wouldn't underestimate the detemination of the people of Texas if I were you.

Not enough people are ready to take up arms... yet. To many would rather live in their little bubble of facebook and american idol...
The question, I think, is what's it going to take to get people ready to revolt and do this sort of thing?

It's approaching 80,000 signatures and growing At least it should garner some attention to the anger of the people who are being run over by an out of control federal government. King George was ousted for less

It won't happen. It's easy to sign an online petition but it takes a lot of will, and balls, to actually do something that will get the job done. Look how long it has taken the free state project to get up and running. It takes will and a real belief in the cause. There is absolutely nothing significant behind some digital petition. Sad but true.

According to The Blaze newsletter, as of this afternoon there are 47 states petitioning to secede. If enough of them decide to give Obama the middle finger, pretty soon his title will be President of Washington DC, because that will be all that's left for him to be President OF.

It means nothing. If you do the math you'll see those people that signed those online petions are a tiny tiny tiny minority of the population. The gov is laughing at us right now. It will be crushed. Now- if all those people in all those states who petitioned moved to texas then that would be a different story. And then they would have to mobilize by getting deeply involved in state government, demonstrate and try to convince the lazy complacent neighbors that this is a good move for Texas. Ain't gonna happen.

Texas has always done its own thing. It was admitted to the union in an extraordinary way back in 1845. Not able to get a 2/3 majority legally required for an annexation treaty (Texas was a Republic favoring slavery at the time), President Polk simply proposed a joint resolution to annex Texas. A resolution only requires a simple majority for approval and Polk had that. There were cries of protest that this was unconstitutional, but as we have seen over the years, constitutionality is a small obstacle for a determined President to get his way.

Texas accepted the offer and the rest is history. Since it was mutually agreed to and acted upon by both governments (constitutionally or not) it has been legally viewed as a binding contract. So there you go. Maybe an enterprising lawyer can find a loophole to negate the contract and save the trouble and expense of a civil war.

Well, the haters have already begun to spew.

Let them spew. At this point, this is just a trial balloon, but a damn good one. If it achieves takeoff, I'll go live down there myself for a while and help with the war effort. Because as another commenter has already said, it ain't gonna happen peacefully -- it will take a war to achieve it.

Dunno how long I can stand living in that flat, barren, boring wasteland, but I'll go for as long as I can stand it! 'Coz I do love the people of Texas and I'd love to see this happen.
