It would be criminally irresponsible to authorize this president to escalate U.S. military involvement in Syria. The Commander in Chief has no clear objective, no willingness to support the military through thick and thin to achieve a decisive outcome, and would recoil from the kind of continuing presence necessary to maintain order in the aftermath. War is war, and if the U.S. invades Syria on the side of the rebels, the only logical goals would be to overthrow Assad, and to birth and provide continuing security for a functioning, democratic government. An Obama war would be another political gesture to back up his red line trash talk. The U.S. and its government are not one man. Obama has no credibility left to lose, and the nation’s credibility will be more impaired by another gesture-war than it has been by backing away from our president’s blather. As usually happens to playground braggarts, a better player―Putin―has shown that Obama has no game. To order men and women to die for this idiot would be both stupid policy and an obscenely immoral act.
