This story has some strange aspects to it.
The Canadian group Alberta Aurora Chasers
Spot a new feature of the northern lights.
I beautiful purple twisting ribbon of electrically charged particles like a birkeland current. They named it Steve after a scary bush to some hedgehogs in a movie.

Find the other odd comments and aspects of this story.

Not sure who posted it, but there was an interesting discussion (about 90 minutes long) about solar phenomena and the discussion turned to these purple discharges as being signs of an extremely vulnerable terran ionosphere. Not good if a CME comes at us.

That was my thought and at the end of the beam is Galt's Gulch where it is captured and transformed into a low cost energy source but highly profitable venture for him.

OUC anything that seems odd to you in the article?

Yea, not the fact that we have a photo but that we actually have authoritative conformation.
As for the beam...history has seen this before.

        The article points this out,
The other thing that I wonder about is it's effect...seems that something like that would've done more damage but Ben (SO) and David-didn't add anything to that thought. We have been under extreme electron storm conditions lately. Ben mentioned the word, "Matter"...that's interesting. I'm sure there are many on earth that could use and probable missing and electron or two...laughing!

"It turns out that Steve is actually remarkably common, but we hadn't noticed it before. It's thanks to ground-based observations, satellites, today's explosion of access to data and an army of citizen scientists joining forces to document it," says Donovan.

Remarkably common, probably if you track back over hundreds of millions of years, but not in my life time. Calling it a new aurora phenomena is contradictory to me.

I love the aurora, have wanted to see it before I exit stage left.... I did see an article on a website that says some groups are experimenting with pulling power from the electromagnetic field of eart, that all planets generate one, and that it was a primary idea of Nikolai Tesla, and that o=was one reason the FBI snagged all his stuff when he died and his materials were never made public. John Galt may live yet....

Tesla research stolen from his heirs hours after his death courtesy of the good ol USA.
      A couple of Tesla Quotes

"I don’t care that they stole my idea… I care that they don’t have any of their own"

"The scientists of today think deeply instead of clearly. One must be sane to think clearly, but one can think deeply and be quite insane."
