It has been 1 week since I wrote "Who is John Galt" on a sign outside of one entrance to my store. In that time 1 customer commented that she had read AS in college but preferred The Fountainhead. She is also an Obama supporter. Just today I had a customer in that had a "Who is John Galt" sweatshirt on. I told him about our Gulch. He made a deal with all his kids and their friends. If they read the book he will buy it for them and when they finish he buys them a shirt. In addition to my sign I put "Who is John Galt" on my facebook page. One friend from high school read the book and saw both films. Hope he joins us here soon. Another said John Galt was a failed philosophy major. Explains why he was picked on in high school. A third friend did not understand the question. He is a schoolteacher. Undaunted and undeterred I will continue to find ways to bring like minds into the Gulch. Thanks all.

Some years ago I wrote a large number of comments on the online forum for the local newspaper, using the name "John Galt" (it's a small town--I did not expect many if any to recognize it). Some were throwaway comments, others off-the-cuff social commentary, others, critiques of the quality of material that appeared in the newspaper (the editor brags about never have taken a journalism course).

I did not expect the response. Lots of venom, which I expected, but others joined in to thank me for my "fresh voice". The newspaper eventually put a moderator on the forum (which was, to be sure, badly needed), canceled my account twice (even though it is supposed to be available to every subscriber), and the editor began railing about my posts in some of his columns.

And then something interesting happened. Chalked and spray-painted dollar signs began appearing in various places around town. The work of several hands, going by their appearance at least. This continued for at least a year.

Whether there was a connection or not I have no idea, but at some point the newspaper stopped censoring me. I have long since found better uses for my time, but I do find the interlude interesting. I've often wondered if there was another striker out there, whose name I will presumably never know.

How could someone prefer the Fountainhead and be an O supporter? Those two views seem antithetical, unless she merely liked the prose of the book and took nothing from the content.

Great idea. I, too, post that message. I printed up 5000 post-it notes and stick them up wherever I go. Menus in restaurants, items in the grocery store, store entries..... Like you, I find few who know John Galt.

Whe have a friend who has a young autistic son who read AS, and liked it so much he wanted to do a book report/presentation on it (he is around 6th grade). The teacher wouldn't let him. No reason given, but I am sure we all understand why. John Gault is a better symbol than the Tea Party, the TP made a vauge attempt to come out of the dark, but has been swallowed up by the political establishment. We really need a party that is NOT political, but centered in reality, otherwise this whole dreary mess will go on and on until it implodes soon.
