A really thought provoking Sci Fi Future movie, as far as the possibility of another planet and how they would control the immigration to it.

Very impressive. Ominous interpretation of the future.

AJ, my impression was that it is a accurate extrapolation of the current framework we live under. Government has control of all the space exploration and transport, so it becomes a government run operation, with the government exercising ultimate authority in deciding who was worthy. I believe the basic point was that the guy who was a government servant, allowed his humanity to overrule his loyalty, to make up for the initial atrocity he committed in "following orders".

Why are projections of the future always so apocalyptic? Is it because of the innate fear of the unknown we all seem to harbor, or because we can't envision the complexities of a future society?

While the acting in this film is surprisingly good, and the special effects very professional, the idea of lethal control of immigration is primitive, and doesn't fit with a society advanced enough to reach other livable planets. Thanks to the coming invasion of our personal space and minds by information systems, it's more likely control will be enforced (if necessary) by more subtle means.

The disappointing thought is that this story may be intended as a condemnation of national border control efforts today. Empathy for the displaced or subjugated should not be a call for national suicide, so I hope that was not the intent of the producers.

Maybe that WAS their intent, now that you place it in that light. That seems to be a good analysis of a statement. Although the lethal control was exercised on the wrong side of the fence, (being the Leap is the fence), it is still a "mean government entity kills poor refugees" scenario. Without a background (like maybe they only have enough facilities on the new world to support only so many people at a time?) to place it against, there is no way I can tell.

    Thanks for posting, nick!
I'd understand the statists not wanting to lose the rich who pay taxes, but what is the motivation to stop people smugglers from taking the poor and petty criminals to the new, empty Australia where there is a need for cheap labor ?
(I have not watched the movie yet, so it may be explained therein;^)

Nope, there is no explanation given, it would have been nice if they had built a framework to explain it, in fact, that was a point I di not consider, as I just accepted the premise they proposed that there was a reason.

Lessee -- Make some really impressive sets, make 1/2 the film in the dark, make the plot almost incomprehensible, make the hero an anti-hero, make both heroes (male & female) mumble disjointedly, and call it art. If it were a painting, it would be halfway between impressionism and a guy dropping paint from a 10 foot ladder. Without all the artsy-fartsy it is a story that could be told in less than 5 minutes.

You cannot make a worthless story into a great story by endowing it with senseless photography no matter how well done.

Herb! You are a cultural barbarian! :)
Really, not all stories appeal to everyone. I liked the premise, and the short film treatment of just one idea, and how something that is often portrayed in mainstream Sci Fi as like the old west (just go west, young man) could really be "No tickee, no payee".

I'll stream this to my Roku-equipped TV later.

I also question why the government would fight against the smugglers. Unless they had worked out some kind of tax deal with those privileged to go. Still, I remember that our own State of Georgia began as a penal resettlement colony, similar to Australia.
