Portland Anarchists Begin Fixing Roads & Potholes (Because the Government Won't)

This article says it all: The roads in Oregon are a complete mess, and I am willing to bet that both local and State keep it that way to make people think they need to give them more, because the huge amount they waste just isn't enough. The comment from the commissar of roads says it all (we just threaten anyone who may have a solution):
Rivera also warned that individuals who choose to fix the roads could face potential civil liability if someone’s car is damaged. The irony is that, currently, if an individual’s vehicle is damaged due to government inaction on potholes, the government is rarely held accountable.

You know what I love about those photos? The guys fixing the roads are doing it with masks over their faces. Haha!!! That's funny. I may go plant a tree or clean out the sand box (cats) in my neighborhood park with a mask over my face, now.

We had a someone who plowed the bike paths for the area south of Madison without authorization. Madison has great snow removal on paths within the city. Apparently the authorities were officially against it and wanted him to stop for insurance reasons or something, but I got the idea they were looking the other way because many commuters who go from Madison to Fitchburg benefit from having the paths cleared. I really appreciated the rogue plowing when I worked in Fitchburg.

We had the same problem here: with private citizens clearing some of the roads and paths this winter when we got record snowfall and the plows were busy 24/7 trying to keep the main roads open. Fortunately, one of the people they went after was a Colonel in the National Guard who has a lawyer friend. He told them that he was happy to take them to Court if they tried to enforce anything. They backed down quickly.

Anarchists hold the opinion that taxation is theft, and they wouldn't want to be paid with stolen money, so they would never send the state a bill. I think their goal is to demonstrate that society does not need government in order to function, and that we would actually live better lives and solve our problems more efficiently without government. One of the most common objections to anarchy is, "But who will build the roads?" so I think this is a clever, effective answer which has earned the anarchist movement some valuable PR points.

The bill would likely be far less expensive than government workers using government purchased materials and tools.

Of course, there is no middleman politician getting his cut in the mix. This year they had a bumper crop of potholes, especially where they went cheap and tried to cut and fill only the tire indents in the roads with 2 strips of pavement. Most of them flaked up or got a killer hole hiding in them, and if you do not swerve around them, you could lose a tire...

And, from Maryland/West Virginia, a private toll bridge saving local residents 15 miles and a half hour of driving: http://wvuncovered.wvu.edu/stories/fa.... "In the mid-1990s, the State of Maryland . . . closed the bridge over supposed safety concerns, and . . . erected large jersey barriers on both ends of the bridge. . . . '[A] bunch of the older guys in town…took [a steam]roller and moved the concrete abutments that were sitting in front of the bridge,' [a local business owner] said. 'They never did put them back.'”

Also, despite the way many people conflate them, anarchy and chaos are not synonyms. The distinction I like best, though I've been unable to locate the author, says, "Anarchy doesn't mean no rules; it means no rulers." When Dagny trespassed into the Gulch, no ruler sent minions to punish her, because as Galt told her, "Our first rule here . . . is that one must always see for oneself."

Indeed, and the issue is the rulers are so wrapped up in their ruling that they have neglected the rulees, who are now revolting against bad governance. This has been true through the ages all the way back to Robin Hood. Dagny still had to ultimately abide bu their rules or leave.

My mother volunteered at school libraries in Virginia Beach for many years. She never had any librarian education, yet she did understand the system and was awarded many accolades. She is now living in a retirement community. I agree this is not a government facility, but it does have a library. Oh, by the way she is 102!

She is an excellent example of what can be done. Most of us who grew up in the 60's and 70's had similar experiences. It was not a job vocation, except for the actual Librarian/s who actually had to organize the place. If you go to libraries today, there is no real standard used, you can find books listed alphabetically, or by subject, or by author and spend a long time looking for specific material.

    Thumbs up to everyone.
I know a fellow who received s substantial fine for using his skid steer to remove snow from the from his cul de sac. I remove snow from the street in front of my house manually. Hopefully they don't think I can damage the street or curb with my shovel or snow scoop. The RCMP fellows have given me the thumbs up as they go by, but I wonder about bylaw. The funny thing is that they will hand out fines for people removing snow from the streets with a machine but fail to fine people who shovel or snow blow snow from their sidewalks and or driveways onto the street thus potentially putting public safety at stake. I thought about filling in the odd pothole with at least sand and gravel until the repairs can be done properly, but alas don't want the ticket.

When we first moved to Florida in the late 70s, the county libraries were mostly staffed by retirees who volunteered their time. As the years passed, the union got either the state or the county to pass a law forbidding volunteers and mandating that only professionals with degrees could work at the libraries. I think it's ridiculous that willing volunteers are barred from working, while taxpayers are forced to pay for work which was offered free -- but that's the way of government.

It also illustrates the corrupt nature of both government and unions. They say it takes "educated professionals", well, it seemed reality did not bear that out. But because it meant union jobs and retirements and influence, I am willing to bet that cost was passed onto the taxpayer to "pay for what they use" when in fact, there was no debt in the first place. Your government at work.....

I find that you have to say to the local gov't I'll fix the the damn pothole. The response is very quick, a crew is out their the next day doing the repair. It works here in Az.

As you threaten to expose the fact it is not something the average joe cannot do, as well as the fact, "we do not need no stinkin government". That is why I do not see any of this as anarchistic, it is simply reality playing out. There's a hole, fill it. Period. You begin to threaten their very existence....
