HISTORY IS BEING MADE. A show that bypassed all the networks who insisted on a pilot season, perhaps because it shows liberal politicians to be Machiavellian, is distributed by Netflix in a direct-to-DVD offering. House of Cards has 13 nominations for the 2013 Emmys in two weeks time, the most for such a distribution ever. Gatekeepers of content everywhere (songs, opinion pieces, books, comedy, TV serials, movies) are under pressure, and that's a good thing.

It is not just 'liberal' politicians who are Machiavellian, I reckon, the political process favors that characteristic, it is not enough to elect the 'right' person, stricter safeguards against ever increasing government power are needed. and
Hello Vinay. When are you in Perth next?

Hi, Lucky. I was in Perth last in March 2012 for the debate versus the socialists at UWA. Don't know when the next time will be. resident in Sydney.
BTW, yes, of course, all, not just liberal, politicians are Machiavellian. But the left media and TV networks won't mind shows that show right-wing politicians to be manipulative. This is the beauty of House of Cards---that left-wing are manipulative, and it got through, at least via Netflix, even if all the TV networks rejected it.

    Wow!

We will look for "House of Cards." I don't care too much one way or the other about the politics - we are old "West Wing" fans here - but the complex character-based drama sounds compelling. Thanks!

BTW: I gave the Original Post a Thumbs Up, taking it from Zero to One, so someone must have dinged it (maybe a Fox producer who turned down the show for the lack of a pilot.)

Thanks, don't know why they dinged it. Definitely not spam. I have nothing at all to gain financially or otherwise by recommending this show.

sorry about that, it happens. maybe Mike is right about the producer who turned it down. I, too, love the show. I watch it with dreadful fascination. The acting is superb. I am pleased with the innovation some sites, such as Netflix, are doing in creating their own series and bringing in some great british and irish series as well.
