'We waited for decades': Polish govt welcomes US troops

This is good news. It comes a little late but it is the right thing to do. A combat Brigade is a large enough force to make the Russians thing before pulling another Crimea. It also lets the world know that we stand with our allies.
As I said, it is a little late but not too late. It is not a provocation, Poland is a member of NATO and did ask repeatedly for the stationing of troops there. Obama had to have this move planned for a relatively long period, you just don't tell a brigade go to Poland tomorrow and have it happen.

No on all counts. Even if such a deployment could be justified (an iffy proposition), it makes no sense to initiate it a week before the President is replaced by one who does not share his views. Obama may have planned this for some time, but he was likely operating on the assumption that he would be handing over the reins of power to Hillary. Now it appears that Obama is doing this either to spite Trump or to tie his hands. It’s part of a pattern of behavior Obama has engaged in ever since Trump won the election. January 20th can’t come soon enough!

Your observations may be true but based on my experience this was not initiated a week agao. In order to get the logistics, personnel and equipment prepared for shipment, transported and reconstituted in Europe would take6 to 9 months. It would not be a secrete from the Kremlin nor anyone else with satellites or even HUMINT here.
Yes it could turn in a game of brinksmanship but I don't think so. The troops are not in Ukraine but Poland. The Air Force base in Inserlik didn't cause an issue and doesn't to this day.
Russia having Warsaw pact troops in East Germany did not cause a war.
It is about time we supported our allies especially those that have supported us (Poland, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuanian to be specific (scince the dissolution of the USSR and their admission into NATO). I dare say the Finns are resting a little easier tonight as well.
      Anyway, that's my opinion.

Even if it was initiated 9 months ago, it was likely done on the supposition that Obama would be passing the torch either to Hillary or to a Republican who shared his foreign policy perspective. He did not anticipate a Trump victory.

And "support for our allies" doesn't mean sending troops to Russia's doorstep a week before a new President takes office. It's not like Russia plans to invade Poland in the next five days.

Geographically speaking we have more trops nearer to the Russian Border in the middle east than we do in Europe. There are at least 3 sovereign nations between our troops and Russia in Europe. In the middle east there are none.
A much more "Threatening action would have been to deploy the ATBM stations to Poland. Obama cancelled them early on aftr promising they would be delivered.

Oh goody! Another excuse to send US troops to some far-flung corner of the world to play world policeman. I'm sure AR would have approved!

Poles should have learned through there own history that they need to build up their own military. As a second generation Polish-American has studied Polish History to realize that they have been the most invaded country in Europe.
They should have learned by now that Putin has one thing on his mind is a Russian Empire. Maybe the Polish leaders should look back to the time of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and King Sobieski fielded quite a large army to stop and defeat the Turks. I don't know about the current politics or economy of Poland but maybe they should start moving in that direction.

Poland has been in the position, over the centuries, of being faced with neighbors whose discussion every two or three generations was, "How shall we divide Poland?"

It's also been the highway over which France and then Germany invaded Russia. Never quite worked, though. The famous Генерал Зима (General Winter) has always been victorious.

Trump will get Russia to stop being so expansionist, in my view. There are things Russia wants and things we want. Russia taking over other countries is not one of the things we will stand for. Russia needs international cooperation for survival, and Putin knows this. He was just taking advantage of stupid Obama.
