In Jan 2000 China's communist govt 's "open up to the west" policy began. Funny how allowing production and some economic freedom enables holidays. A value to many ,and provides wonderful memories that stimulate consciousness.
Some 10000 workers are involved in extracting, hauling, assembling and carving the ice and snow for building the 16th Harbin Ice and Snow World this year.
Me dino at home in a town adjacent to Birmingham, Alabama, just stepped outside to check a thermometer. It is 70 degrees in the shade. The predicted high for this Christmas today is 75 with a low of 61. Sometimes my area sees snow and sometimes it really for really real sticks. Traffic accidents then abound due to people who have next to nothing experience driving on snow and ice. Merry Christmas. Sigh. That ice and snow sculpting is breathtaking by the way. Seems like its on an alien planet, though.
I'm in Lexington, NC. We had t-shirt weather, albeit not quite as warm as down there in Dinotown. In Michigan there was an ice festival in a nearby town that was a treat to wander through ... but nothing on this scale.
I remember as a teenager going with my family to an evening Christmas Mass during the 60s and everyone was wearing short sleeve shirts with ties. I'm no longer a Catholic but today I went to an evening Christmas party in a T-shirt. Brought a jacket in my car just in case; but when I drove home, I did not need it. A warm Christmas like this 'un in Alabama is a somewhat rare cyclic event called the weather. It was pretty cold earlier this month. Barely below freezing a couple of early mornings.
Hi SBR (abv.), It is fun to see the creations on a small scale or grand when intent and effort are employed. Glad you are having nice weather. Last Sunday -24 with -62 wind chill--- today 36 raining all day and gusts to 50 mph. Either way you just adapt. Peace on Earth, DOB
You too! Throw a snowball for the dino. Yes, I've actually thrown a snowball in Alabama. Never threw a snowball for never seeing snow as a kid due to growing up half an hour from the Florida state line in Dothan, AL. I was born in Massachusetts but my folks moved south when I was age four.
We have about a foot of snow. I shovel the patio out the back yard and when the temp warms and gets to 32 the snow will stick together . I have tossed a few at a large ash tree trunk with varied results .In grade school the nuns would say no throwing missiles. It was half the winter before I could figure out what they were talking about.
I have always wanted to go to see the Harbin ice festival. It is very cold there and the sculptures last a long time. It would take several days to see it all. Amazing talent on display in the sculptures and their intricate workmanship, and it only lasts until spring and the work is gone.
I grew up in that part of the world. You know, where it snows in October and you don't see green grass again until May. Anyway, I think it is a tradition in that part of the US, the college campus in Stevens Point, Wisconsin always put on a ice carving festival on the front lawn of the Main Admin building. A lot were done by the college kids but some of the locals got in on the festivities also. Lots of fun and camaraderie.
Hi Jimslag, In Minnesota I often would build a large snow man with the kids when the snow was right and then carve them into characters. Two memorable ones , 12/28/82 after 28" inches and the weather warmed a bit I made a sculptor of ET and for a couple of weeks it lasted. About 12 years and 3 kids later we made a huge teenage ninja turtle. Have a great photo of them all smiling next to it . One of our kids passed away in 2004 and that photo is really treasured. With a little food coloring it was awesome . Last year my nephew won the St. Paul Winter Carnival snow sculpture contest and an entry into the Nationals at Lake Geneva Wisconsin.
Snow forts , igloo's, we had a nice little hill on a path that wound through the woods. A group of us with shovels would make a bobsled type of run. We would be outside all day ...cold no problem.

I love remote, sub-arctic places.
