(Sorry LetsShrug... curious to see if this list is shorter)

"1) Water."

I believe that you think everyone is equal, but there are some it seems, such as your work colleague, who thinks otherwise. They are the problem. I like your comments to him.

In my dealings with people, though, I meet mainly people who claim to operate fairly and want to work with people to solve problems and get things working-- no racist / sexist nonsense.
It could be that a) Madison is unique in this way, b) people don't admit their bigotry, c) indifference to bigotry is confined to losers in rural trailer parks that I don't come into contact with, or d) something I'm not even thinking of. For whatever reason, I don't see that much indifference to bigotry in my experience.

Agreed. You'll have to be mindful that even in a world where you have the freedom to do whatever you want with what you possess, you shouldn't have the freedom to force your will upon others. Else you will end with barbarianism. Haha isms are fun.

I guess serious is a relative term. Either or, if you can't effect something, as in you can't stop people from making logical errors, it only becomes serious when you try to change the nature of reality, as that's when real crimes start to happen. Also there's a sense of degree, since seriousness is relative. Logical errors exist in everything people do, with racist and sexist errors being of less importance than most considering the large scale.

But that sounds like "taking freedom too far," just as "Islamism" is taking Islam too far. I wouldn't be completely shocked to see libertarian ideas branded with the Orwellian epithet "freedomism".

There's a huge difference in politics and real life for me. If I someone judges me or I judge someone unfairly, that's VERY unfortunate. If politicians try to work a race angle, I just ignore it as a case of politicians exploiting a real problem. In my life I try to deal with people fairly.

It seems like the attitude among those who spend time watching politicians is, "Oh yeah, you can't MAKE me treat people fairly." That's very true.

"Sexism and racism aren't serious. People should be allowed to use their judgement, even if they are foolish enough to apply it to such a broad category of people."

People will use their judgement regardless of what other doe. Die gendanken sind frei. You can be sure that in organizations that insist you must "believe" XYZ, not everyone does.

None of this diminishes the seriousness of logical errors.

"But you should be allowed to make logical errors!" you'll say. I say you cannot STOP people from making logical errors. They're still serious.

Words that offend no one are PC. But to plagiarize LS above, "Offending someone doesn't infringe on their rights." PC is infringing on my 1st amendment rights.

The way I see it...people who get offended WANT to be offended. It gives them a certain power over another person and once a person is painted hurtful or cruel the topic is lost because it puts them on the defense. I have no time for someone who's easily offended. Not to mention they are NO fun to be around anyway. I'm only willing to walk on eggshells around sleeping babies...

That's the point we're trying to prove. Anything, or almost anything, can be turned into something offensive by an offendee. PC is boxing us into corners of silence. Very INtolerant from those who love to preach tolerance, not to mention stepping pretty hard on the First Amendment.

No. I'm implying that being a victim of "____ism" often times is a choice to push an agenda, gain an advantage, receive unearned profits/benefits etc. It can be used as a weapon. It can also be used as a why to avoid personal responsibility. They won't so I can't. It can be used by either the 'victim' or the 'victimizer'. Choice.

In the New York Metro area there is every walk of life; so much so that everyone is equal. At work I overheard a guy in his 20’s state “working here is making me racist.” We joke around but… I said to him (seriously) “MLK said, judge a man by his character..” where he interjected, emphatically “ ”or the color of his skin!” he was just being funny. What I say to progressives is “A capitalist only wants the person who can do the best job for the right price.” inherently non racist.
