I have been a long time reader and follower and practicer of Ayn Rand's philosophy for quite some time. I ebb and flow with it, at times more serious and involved than at others. Today I search it out because one of her points was demonstrated to me in reality in a way that frankly scares the crap out of me. I was told that the promotion I had applied for was given to someone else because I mentioned in my interview that one of the reasons I was applying was because of the pay raise that that was involved. More than that, I was "strongly encouraged" never to mention the word "money" during a job interview!!!

I was so dumbfounded that my jaw dropped and I had nothing to say. Atlas Shrugged (which I have read many times) flashed through my head, and I am reconsidering wether or not I will even continue to work there in my current capacity.

It is very revealing when a person or a company considers it wrong for you to want just compensation for your work.

Welcome to the Gulch... sorry to hear about the promotion.

What did you say when they told you not to mention money in interviews?
