One has to wonder how much of a hand the Chinese had in getting this guy elected. His people shoot drug dealers in the street, and he throws insults more than Trump, yet he is doing what the Chinese need most: Allowing them free rein.

There's a lot to this story that Americans aren't getting. I've gotten some of it via a Philippine friend. The Philippines and China have long had what I'd call "slave-labor agreements". I don't know if any here are familiar with Duterte's tough approach on crime. While it's effective, it's also prime for horrible abuses (don't know if that's happened yet). He's wildly popular with the masses there in spite of this. Overall...just very interesting developments over there. Obama, IMO, really screwed the pooch on this situation, too. The next Chief will have to deal with it. Good luck with that, America...

It seems to me that one country at a time is learning that an alliance with the usa is not necessarily in their best interest. By the same token those who really direct the usa foreign policy do not recognize that they are being ignored.

Philippine morality is sadly lacking. I dont think much of people from that part of the world , and try to stay clear of them.

Another foreign fiasco by the Obama administration. The Philippines are crucial to our military positions in the far east. This may be the next step in China's moves to take over the region.

The Phillippinos are in a dangerous situation: China is encroaching on their territorial waters to expand their influence while claiming "mineral rights" all over the South China sea such as in the Spratly island chain. China is only a few hundred miles away and a major power. The US was once a major ally to the Phillippines, but Obama has largely ignored the Chinese' incursions. And it doesn't appear that anything would change there regardless of who gets elected.

So the Phillippinos are playing the survival card. Since the US won't back them and protect them, they really don't have much choice but to try to get along with China.

Who care what happens in PI? It is none of the business of the US and we ought to close our military base there (and all other foreign bases), stop bullying the world, and pay off the debt.

And, I assume, you want to Play Red Dawn? Only they will be Chinese, do not assume if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. Look at the War of 1812 for how well neutrality serves.

I have heard this argument in various forms all too often during my long years of life and learned my believing it was wrong. Examples are Nicaragua and Viet Nam. Leave them to settle their own problems, as Rand said, evil falls of its own weight.

I am not advocating all the things they do, a lot of our actions are based on corrupt officials doing corrupt things, Clinton being a shining example, Johnson following along. There is always some things that might need to be done to keep other countries corrupt officials from deciding they could provide us a better quality of corruption. Russia and China just seem to come to mind. They have manipulated many countries in the past, just as we have, and if you withdraw from the field, you open it up to their domination in the end.It is a nasty, ugly fact, that there is always a herd of the corrupt politicos who will sell everyone else down the river for their own gain, Clinton comes to mind...

As Washington said upon leaving office, trade with all and do not interfere with the politics of any other nation. I don't think he foresaw the US having 900+ military bases in 140+ foreign countries. PI (in the paper today) says death to drug possession. I disagree, but it is not my fight and surely it is not the business of the US. My two cents worth.

That may be true, and how they wish to deal with the issue is their business. The use of Human Rights is often used to justify lots of politics, but I have yet to see a war started for them.

I think Bush the Lesser may have used HR as a "make weight" argument for the Gulf war after his claims of "god told him to do it" and the WMDs faded from memory.

He sounds like a Philippine patriot who wants the best for his people. He certainly has gauged Obama correctly. I doubt the banksters will let him take the Philippines to be a Chinese ally without a fight though. He should make certain he has very loyal security staff. The CIA has lots of resources.

Well, when you are stuck between 2 big boys (which, one of them is seriously disabled) you have to know which side is the stronger, to get the best deal. Can't blame them, the US is not going to pursuade anyone soon that they will stand with them.
