Why are Michael Aarethun's posts being hidden? They are neither obscene or for that matter facetious. It is pissing me off because I find most of his posts thought-provoking. Yes, he is often a pain in the ass, but since when was that a disqualifier?

When a person uses speech that is incomprehensible, with poor grammar and run-on sentences, I automatically discount their opinion. I believe that education matters, as well respect for the listener to make an effort to correct one's grammar and proofread their presentation.

I absolutely agree with you 100%!!!
The people who run the Gulch have set it up so that it is very easy to correct errors. Sometimes in our haste to get our thoughts down, mistakes are made. Everyone does it, and it is even possible to miss one or two now and then, but on a regular basis - shame, shame. However, I really get troubled by blanking someone. It's too close to censorship. I know it's not, but still.....

I don't like censorship either. I do like to read commentary that is legible. However, I should be allowed to see and comment on a subject whether or not the grammar is correct. Hiding commentary for grammatical deficiencies assumes I am not capable of understanding the message. At times I am not, but it has nothing to do with the grammar. Besides, do we not have an ignore button? Should not we be allowed to decide what comments we like or dislike?

Agree... but don't we get what MA is saying...do you not kind of understand in spite of a few mistakes?
I can read around most mistakes...[including my own]...sometimes I wish they'd extend the edit time.

I usually write on a notepad and then transfer and then do an edit. Time is often a factor. But sometimes the obvious glaring error hits after complete posting. That's what Edit is for and if one has posted something to begin with it is always present.

Even so let's say it's a comment and the Edit has disappeared. One can always copy the body of the comment, use the delete function it returns you to the main post, find the same spot it will have a notification of a delete message. Do an new comment, paste the safe message and make corrections. So that's a useful safety valve for when one has really stepped on it big time which I certainly have.

However there is another function available that should be apparent to anyone - should be. This is not for OUC or Herb or any of the others with a few exceptions.

The human race developed a marvelous system some millennia ago . Open Closed. Off On. Light Dark. A more modern system is the little buttons or switches provided by modern technology. Should you hate the movie and are in a theater 'leave.' A comment to the theater manager might help. I've done that once. Same applies to a crummy concert. For radio and TV it's called two things. Channel Selector and the off on button. A third would be dump it in the trash such as a TV. Telephone etiquette which no longer exists does not mean answer right away or interrupt one's conversation with someone else. Most cell radio phones are filled with a lot of time wasting and interrupting garbage of little consequence. An individual in front of me is important. So now we arrive at posting and the Gulch. The convenient methods are go away, stay but do not read certain posteres most of the time, a real winner is the ignore button. I have several on my list and adding one more today. Can't waste the time on inconsequential nonsense. So as we used to say in the early days of Bulletin Board through phone wires (before internet) Plonk. It's a selective off button. Who? Some are rather apparent but others are due to my particular level in the wonderful world of objectivism. We have some very deep deep thinkers that go beyond my abilities. I use them a way of testing the nature of myself and my own development. It takes effort and dedication but eventually one reaches kilometer stones and can appreciate the discourse. I'm not at that level yet and no one is going to mistake me for Socrates nor Plato much less Aristotle.

But when you enter my little world of expertise don't cry foul. You weren't invited and the kitchen heat is unforgiving.

            Carl was I ugly enough?

Busted! I type with two fingers on one hand and four fingers on the other hand. Sometimes they trip over each other. The one hand now has muscle memory where each finger does the job of two sort of a swivel thing. I also tend to hit the shift key with the opposite hand as the letter key. At one time it was 100 wpm a minute mistake free. Not any more. I suspect before I do the mortal coil shuffle it will all be speech entry with only a few control type keys. That's what happened to Morse Code. Dumping that was a huge mistake for Marine Safety.

Thought provoking, sometimes because there is a distinct lack of rational thought evident in the post and it requires a lot of thought wasted in determining the post is completely disconnected from the topic being discussed. That combined with condescension and insults to anyone pointing out the flaws in reasoning might have resulted in the hidden posts although I can't speak for Gulch management. Other times, his posts have added to the discussion, but he needs to learn to use courtesy to others and organize his thoughts before posting.

I've seen threads ramble from one topic to another by several different contributors, most of them usually quite interesting. I think that it would be better to express your criticism rather than hiding the post. Especially when it is of one particular person. There have been religious converters in the Gulch, people whose thoughts are indistinct and garbled, but 99.999% of Gulch contributors surely get that. I LOVE insults, because people who do that are so easily roasted to a crisp. The thing that really disturbs me is when the posts which are hidden are all from the same contributor, and not all of them are bad.

Hiding is not censorship. It is sound editorial judgment. You can see that the comment exists and click the View Comment link to read it.

MA is the only one I've had to Ignore, as 95% of his comments are tiresomely argumentative and a waste of my time. He's like a kid knocking down others' sandcastles for fun, instead of helping to build better ones. In short, there is no exchange of values.

In certain contexts I can un-ignore him again. Ignoring is tantamount to hiding. We don't need insults nor incoherence. I for one am relieved not to have MA's voluminous rambles splattered all over a thread and seeking to dominate every subject. If I'm curious, I can always bring him out of hiding. The few times I've done so have disappointed. His comments don't move topics forward; they create more heat than light. I'm grateful to management for damping that. Yes, it adds to my mental comfort here, and does not deprive others from still viewing his output.

We don't have to agree with everything that everyone says here. Disagreements don't need to be wrapped in insults. Variety is not only spice but stimulates our own deeper thinking. Let us remember, though, that in an unreasonable world this Gulch is a refuge of Reason where we can not only find intellectual solace but also seek solutions to the greater world problems.

And that brings us back to the main topic of this posting--can we find a physical hideaway for our persons and close ones to shield us from the harsh and destructive realities of the larger culture in which we are embedded? Should our government feel free to blow up someone else’s sparsely populated island, for war-making “practice”? Who “owns” that island? Isn’t it time humanity reached a mutual agreement to end wars forever? Wars are a throw-back to gaining through force, making others live for the victor’s sake. Not a good ethic, just continuous destruction.

As for seeking refuge, a tiny undeveloped island, no matter how idyllic, would require total overhaul for infrastructure and energy sources, and the technological advances humanity has achieved thanks to innovators like Gates and Musk. Or would you like to live like the Amish? And even they have good soil and enough horses, never mind the religious indoctrination.

Would a volcano-riddled island supply a reliable life support all by itself? I would rather stay where I am, where thousands of years of arduous human physical and mental effort have built a magnificent scientific world, and change the culture's corrupt value system conceptually from within. First step in that direction: vote for Gary Johnson.

Flaming? I know that is often referring to a gay man. I guess I'm not up on the latest. Perhaps you can explain your incoherence to me.
Regarding posts, I made myself quite clear.

In this instance, I was replying to MichaelA, not to you, Herb. In that comment he responds as if "flaming" (see definition below) does not apply to him:"Can't stand the heat don't get a kitchen job."
Flaming is what MA sometimes does when someone disagrees with his posting. Its unacceptable internet behavior, especially on a site that has a basis in reason and rational thought.
Re: flaming refer to the FAQ at:
                  https://www.galtsgulchonline.com/faq
                  What is "Flaming?"
Flaming is a hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users, often involving the use of profanity. It is frequently the result of the discussion of heated real-world issues such as politics, religion, and philosophy, or of issues that polarize sub-populations, but can also be provoked by seemingly trivial differences.

I'm expressing this for my own perceptions. You make me very uncomfortable if you're blocking M.A.'s posts. I would rather read them and have others read them and read their commentary as well. I find your posts quite succinct but I don't want anyone deciding things for me.

I am not blocking any posts. Apparently MA violated some Gulch FAQ rule, was warned by the owner of this site, and did not comply with the stated rules even after the warning. This site is provided/owned by the AS movie producers (I think) and as on most internet sites, the site owners decide what is appropriate and act accordingly when people violate the rules. (All my comments are my own, and based upon my observations and my reasoning.)

I think that the best interests of Objectivists living in the US is to focus all energy and thought to build local Objectivist networks right in their own existing communities. I submit that if you do a thorough pro and con list of having a Galt's Gulch on some far-away island vs. right in your own back yard, you would find the advantages of having close to your existing home to far outweigh any other option.

I hope to see others weigh in on this.

It is certainly more in line with the AS readers who did understand the story line and where it led. So I have to agree completely. Even now I do that amongst the expat community. Would I rather live north of the border? Not so sure anymore. Were it not for the 2.5 times increase in value of my income as opposed to the 1/3rd or more (so far) cut in spending power since 2001 and especially 2008 I wouldn't have considered it at all. It certainly is far safer as an added plus. Good affordable medical care. Plenty of amenities. Year round just about sailing, fishing, diving, hiking etc. Many cultural and cultured events. NO US TV unless you sign up and pay extra for it. So it's close enough and enables contact on a 'net' and 'personal' basis. After all any good counter-revolution or revolution for that matter needs a safe operations and support base.
Sorry for the poor grammar, irrelevant thoughts and lack of PC-rap. Try Google Translate - or a dictionary. That's sarcasm. It is not radical reasoning from the collectives.

    Hello freedomforall,
The entire thing is theater. It is chest pounding to try to impress the Chinese and perhaps N.Koreans. I agree with allosaur they should use bikini or some other island in the region they have already damaged. They claim they will use dummy bombs and that it is just for target practice. They could do that anywhere including White Sands. Seems a waste of a potential tropical paradise. Even dummy bombs and the rest of the plans will discourage, if not outright preclude, any peaceful human endeavors there.
    Respectfully,
    O.A.

      Good morning OA,
These comments are not in disagreement with yours. I would prefer the military "practice"
defending and restoring the US constitution versus puffing up their chests to impress the Chinese or N.Koreans. Maybe they would impress the collectivist Statists in our government to follow the law!
First exercise would be to arrest the lawbreakers and enablers (DOJ).
2nd require US Government employees to answer to congressional oversight, if not they instantly forfeit any healthcare or retirement benefits provided by their employers (all of us) oh and they are fired!!!

        Hello Dobrien,
I like it. If we had a strong military with strong, principled executive leaders that say what they mean and mean what they say, we could have a strong defense and avoid much offense. All this bluster and chest pounding without substance is just more kabuki theater and our allies and enemies know it.

We just heard that our toothless congress is now unlikely to hold the IRS head (Koskinen) responsible for the abuses of the people they work for, which according to reports are still ongoing... Our government is worthless on both foreign and domestic fronts. Our Constitution is treated as a mere set of recommendations...

If the Constitution party could drop so much emphasis on "religious foundations and principles" they might gain more traction and could be a better third party option. If they stuck to the secular nature and emphasized the true character of the document as limiting and rejecting big government statism... Ah, but it is a wonderful dream. One day perhaps... if I live long enough, I would like to see it.

Always a pleasure hearing from you,
        O.A.

The toothless congress that obviously is filled with Rino's that likely defrauded their constituency to be elected seem to do nothing to stop the looters and statists from disregarding the law and it's intent.

It's almost as if creating a true "Gulch" would require moving to an alternate universe. There is so much hatred of Ayn Rand and Objectivism by the Lib-Progs that they will seek out and destroy any attempt to form such a place.

Thank you. The answer is in having a place to recharge, converse, discuss, plan and refine plans and methods for ONE month of the year. The other eleven are devoted towards mission accomplishment. Not to forget correcting intentional and unintentional misconceptions such as Objectivism is a religion or objectivism is a political party or objectivism is something other than what it is . Add to that Subjective Superiority questioning without understanding Objectivism at all and making no attempt to do so. Damn! Or subscribing to the fictionary definitions of the other side no matter how ludicrous and historically false.

Sometimes you just have to take a break and learn to breathe again. Thus the Seven Day work week with one day for rest and recharging. We only point out the 11/12ths system. But then we don't print calanders and demand adherence.

A potential Gulch? I don't think so. The government under any administration would never allow it. Also, any inhabiting of such a tiny spit of land by any human inhabitants will undermine the flora and fauna once the infrastructure is installed.

There are several other uninhabited Marianas islands, primarily because of constant volcanic activity. Those could be used for military purposes.

Try it durinig Typhoon season it's where the 200 mile per hour wind live year round. If it was a paradise it would be wall to wall cabanas and condos. However I'm reminded what one of the Samoa residents said and that echoing a similar comment on Tahiti Nui. One man's paradise is another man's prison. Did you notice all the black vegetation? Fishing is good though but no harbors or good anchorages. If there were Club Med would have moved in already.

I would just abhor another destruction of a tropical paradise. Go bomb snow! Leave the tropics beautiful. Plus then these displaced people become permanent tax beneficiaries and live out the next several generations off our tax dollars. Doubt it? Meet me down at Keehi lagoon on any given afternoon and I'll show you same story different island people.

People out to do a 'little' research before flopping words like Island Paradise all over the place. Back to last weeks duck iyour head in the sand idea Zimbabwe. You recall I mentioned the military had the lowest percentage of AIDS' some 20 or so years ago? That's changed it's now 88% and the leader doesn't have anyone to rip off anymore. So come on in and bring money etc. One good place to check on the living value of any area is the PMC's or Private Military Corporations. If they haven't been brought in to clean up a place think twice.

The Marianas are now around 35,000 population of which 29,000 are imiported workers from the mainland. Textiles is the main industry as doing it there allows the label Made In USA to be used. But you won't find $15 minimum wages

Dood, I have sailed a large swath of the Pacific, and visited many Islands, to me they are indeed paradise. Do we get hit by weather sometimes sure, who doesn't?
Take a walk on Kahoolawe or the Bikini atoll. Basically I will knott support the US military making a target out another "Island Paradise" and not just for the the sake of conservation but it creates a whole new group living off federal and state tax dollars.
        Think I'll go surf.
        Edited to add "knott"

sailed or motored. The comment was meant for the dreamers who are looking for the proverbial escape hatch from the realities of life instead of just taking what is there and dealing with it for the sheer enjoyment of living the realities of life. I always had and have a preference for Tonga myself. The fishing, the diving and the sailing were epic. But then every day as a full time liveaboard i'm reminded I live as my reality their dreams and my head is never in the sand but focused on the next horizon.

I had the pleasure of working on a support ship for MSC for the last firing exercise the Navy held in Puerto Rico. But then I wasn't one of the PR's who traded working for the Navy in exchange for making beds and serving the hotel clients or just left PRs legal immigration rate to the US has taken the bulk of the islands inhabitants who traded the joys that island for the paychecks of New York City and other unpleasant places.

For the inhabitants of Pagan once they ent back i hope they found their life but it reminded me of the former slaves of the Chagos Archipelago pretending Diego Garcia was a country and they were citizens.

Yet it is the British Military that keeps that last great paradise of atoll islands in it's natural state and protected from the predations of human kind. At least once they rid the place of brown snakes and rats. Both introduced by previous visitors. Many boats stop at Solomon in the North Chagos but I never heard of any one sleeping ashore. A project paid for by the US Military and carried out by the British Military - and the taxpayers of each country despite the repeated attacks by developers and their lawyers. Those who would strip the archipelago of all sea life.

As for MSC the experence made me glad I had chosen the military instead of the Navy.

Those who look at the results of professional photography and think of escape should look around where they live and ask ....would I do better with no malls and cigarette butt strewn streets and never ask why not clean up what we have....instead of trashing the place and then going elsewhere to do the same.

I can only answer for my small footprint on the planet and pick up the cigarette butts of modern society as they pass through looking for the hotel waiters and their next tray of drinks. But then I live the dream to me it is reality. I also see things as they are and not by visiting some pages of photos by professional photographers hired by developers looking for the next Club Med
          site.

Whose going to save that island from the a far worse fate than Naval Gun fire? Gringo Tourists.

In answer to Enyway's grammar or idiocy it was neither my grammar nor the other persons problem.

The Stated reason was using too much of a cut paste of other articles although what that has to do with this is an unknown. It took four days to reach my computer. No warnings or caution flags. I complied and actually did agree and you'll find a post about military voters Trump vs Hillary in the NEW section done in the approved style. I assume approved that's never been addressed either then or now. The rest is just the usual complaints that some seem to find necessary to carp about but some are spot on and help to improve the product. Both ways have nothing to do with that which your were conversing about. As far is sarcastic what else could you say about idiot remarks?

I was hoping 'I sank' would continue the conversation about the wonders of the Pacific Ocean. Most of mine has been as we call it the Specific Ocean for south of the line. With a fair amount in the northern half. There is a lot of difference between photos with a thin comment space and been there done that eyeball and hands on contact. How many have been to Suvarov or Suwarow Atoll in the North Cooks or smelled the stench of the Tuna plants in American Samoa? Or gone over to the real country of Samoa where they live Fa'a Samoa and not just talk about it. It's more than seeing the football teams and police wearing skirts. Like the hike up to the grave of 'Home Is The Sailor, home from the sea and the hunter home from the hills. Written for his own gravestone. Or dived the underwater tunnel transiting an island in Tonga and listened to the whales sing at the same time.

On the other hand any suggestions on where such training might better take place? Problems come with a new dimension when presented with solutions.

Suppose one of you said, "Why not use their other sites? They must be world wide."

What would your answer be then?

Siberia comes to mind, the middle east?...kill two birds with one stone.
The thing that bugs us all...who the hell does the military, the creatures in government and every other government think they are?...is this the result of the collective ownership of all property of the earth?...bull crap.

The military thinks it is the military. Back up a step All the military is under civilian control. So they ask for a place to do required or needed training.

Up pops little old Pagan. do their due diligence and present the case for the need (did you look up the list of current live fire sites?) and present it with one or more suggestions. One is reopen Vieques that's a throw away. So how about Camp Rilea in Oregon? Another throw away. You don't want one IN the USA because fo the massive amount of money to defend in courts of law. So thewhole 50 are out.

That leaves Territories. Nope for various good reasons population being one the prime points. You don't want to do a French thing and blast nukes all over the islands of the South Pacific. But you don't need to do so. Shell fire is like a huge bullet and easily controlled with direct fire the best and indirect needing close monitoring. It's called Forward Observers or from aircraft or whatever.

Rockets and missiles the same and here comes a break ..Don't need to fire full fledged war shots when practice rounds will do with much less cost. same with auto cannons. Bombs. Bombs are not smart bombs and much more controllable than WWII and they come in small practice versions too!
Best of all no Kangaroo rats.

Now as to the residents who were pulled off the island some years ago for hurricanes. Naturally some want to go back. Ah hah! Who better to help lay out the target areas for the least possible damage especially to flora and fauna.

The decision is made entirely by civilians. Whose intererested? No votes but they can always say we kept it out of NW Oregon. Finally a choice is made. Up comes the objections. But who objects? AS I recall it was civilians that elected the Congress and the President who appointed the Service Secretaries. So who the hell do these civilians think they are? Just to embellish and finish your thought.

Who does the government think they are?

        Your Masters.

        Why?

        You enabled them.

No dictator and no Autocrat ever took power. It was handed to them willingly - By civilians.

By the way what's the cost of an airplane ticket round trip to wonderland? You get a better return for the dollar in Samoa or Tonga.

The alternative is left with no choices..... that's your part to fill in.....
