Look again at that headline.
Homes do not own guns people own guns the PEW poll did not address gun ownership only amount of homes with weapons by one or more owners in amounts of one or more.
How many chips could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck chips. Ask Frito Lay. Makes more sense than the claim of the article for the following reasons.
There is no central gun registry, the poll did not conclude what the reporter claimed nor was that question addressed. There is no Frito Lay to ask.
At best the government says there are about half a million registered firearms due to short barrel, sienced or sound suppressors to be accurate and automatic capability. grenades, mortars, heavy ordnance etc.
There are no other records including gun registration to find totals outside asking the 50 states.
In fact, federal law prohibits the use of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (“NICS”) to create any system of registration of firearms or firearm.

Second is the National Crime Information which gives a thumbs or down on sell or don't sell to the retailer and of course if they are working for the Attorney General who to feed into the black market.
Third is the National ID Card which is progressing quite nicely thanks to a compliant public. Also it's digital .
