Well, if you ever need to do some of the things Google Earth doesn't do (like easily calculate a land area), here is how to get it free, or you could pay 400. I am not sure if they still have a license fee, but it seems like a good deal.

Let us know if find that it works for what you are doing.

It's easy to install and run, but you should read the basic descriptions at the website to understand what it is doing and how to ensure your security by not introducing extraneous elements that can break it.

It's easy to install. The self-contained package includes the modified version of firefox and the tor network access. It doesn't interfere with other installations of firefox or other programs.

It seems that they are into the google map program and its api so they can get what they want by querying api functions and don't need to decrypt network connections directly.

Can you use it with tor? If so you should probably register with google maps under a dedicated name for that use so the rest of your data can't be compromised via the google map program internally. Tor only blocks sharing of data by the firefox browser, depending on what plugins you use.

Thanks, ewv. Nasty, but it implies you have connections with SSIDs it can trace. I would suppose an encrypted WiFi would negate that. But still, if I get ransom ware, I will slag the machine first, then rebuild from a back up. Screw them.

Agreed, the Internet security package is a total system, monitors av, tracking, and program execution. It will not allow remote acess unless specifically authorized by you at the time. Kaspersky is very highly rated, and I have not had any issues since starting to use it. I could not log onto Citibank to pay a bill tonight, until I turned off the privacy protection, They track you even when you pay them, go figure.

Ahhh, interesting, I will look into it, thanks. Kaspersky is a good defense but is not totally secure.

The tor browser is modified version of firefox set up to run on a secure network that cannot be traced back to you. The data goes through secure servers connected by multiple hops (so it tends to be slower). No server knows where the data is coming from or going to other than the immediate predecessor and successor. The browser is modified to not retain data that can be accessed. https://www.torproject.org/

The only data accessible by Google to connect your searches with you would be through the installation of the map program on your pc so it would be up to you use it in a secure user account (not administrator), etc. It also depends on how devious they are willing to be to put effort into breaking privacy beyond the routine browser violations like tracking cookies (which don't work with tor).

ewv, I really do not know, I have not even heard of the tor browser. If it is functional HTML browser, their thirst for your data may get in the way. Kaspersy Internet Security has a secure browsing function and I went from 320 "data tappers" to 3 on Yahoo when I started using it, and it did not effect anything. Maybe that would help?

Sure, MS is doing it to. Other than just not using any communications, everyone is stealing your data and privacy to sell to someone. But some people may be able to use it. I use it to measure land sizes, as realtos say it is 20 acres, but there is only 5 usuable. Better than actually driving 200 miles to find out they lied. I don't care if Googles data fetish has it.
