I always thought of sailing as making a very expensive hole in the water.
    No accounting for tastes.

You are not wrong but when full time there is no property and associated costs, house and associaed costs, no vehicle other than a folding bicycle and associated costs and to make it real affordable I became single and got rid of a huge debt maker existence. Not to slam the institution but it's not for everyone. When I'm at dock I pay for the dock space, electricity etc. walk use city bus and occasionally a taxi. Insurance is liability on the boat for this area about $170 a year and $70 for air ambulance from DAN.

Most of my provided insurance is the cost of medicare at $100 per month and military retirement which is worth having as it saved me from the evil clutches of Obamacare call it $1500 a year and most has no use since it's only useful across the the border. Flu shots here are zero charge for everyione including tourists. medicines are 25% to 40% of US costs dental the same etc.

Fuel is higher but other taxes are non existent unless i buy a house and then they are a pittance. I also don't buy fuel except for propane and occasionally top of the auxilary engine tanks. with diesel . Food costs are half US prices. To go back for some banking or other business or get a new VISA it's $80 round trip ont he midnight bus up one night do business return the next night.

if I'm in my closest hang out area AND ITS SAFER!

So it's all a matter of trading a higher cost to own everything for a lower cost to own what's needed. Buying for something to put on or in the boat, the full time house, begs one question. Where will it be stowed. Do i really want to get rid of something else to have that? Do I real want that? Nine times out of ten the answer is No. Of the Yes's what I can't get here I can get from Amazon delivered. Like the last two Jack Aubrey books in the series by Patrick O'brien. or those Objectivist Newsletter compiliations.

In that way with good maintenance it's an enjoyable hole in the water and well worth the lesser cost of living. no lawn to mow but I can fish off four sides without taking more than tensteps mostly just three to five, clean and grille one step away and watch the vistas in four directions.

Get tiired of the view move to the next bay...and then there is spear fishing scuba bottom fishing trolling photography but ...so far I'm doing fine plunked down in retirement land. USA priced itself out of the market. and may very well undergo a name change next year. Yuck!

You have committed to a lifestyle that obviously suits you. It is not for everyone. There certainly seems to be financial advantages in the way you do it. I was, of course, referring more to the people who sail as a hobby.

Yes on both counts. I looked for a way not to be relegated to a life of poverty as economics were kililng the value of my then pending retirement (80's) Chose to continue working in a second career and prepared for the economic creep to assault that addition to the fund. I looked at the options and my personal likes/dislikes and bingo the answer was live on a boat with power producing equipment, get off the grid and leave room for books, music, and fishing poles.

Not for everyone. but then objectively speaking I find it a very useful and ethical decision for moi!

The last collective responsibilty of contributing to an education fund by providing money and medical insurance - by law - not by choice concluded I still contribute to education of others by choice but mine is continuing and comes first.

And with my new bottle of malt vinegar I'm ready to go fishing again! It's an ethical test of the nature of my culinary skills.

Not sure about this model, but USSubs sell a variety of sizes, from a four person model at a little under $2M, up to a floating mansion over 200' long with a $250M price tag. Those are diesel-electric subs, with an operational depth of 1000'.

Trying to think if the USCG has a license for such. and came up with YES.

Mini Submarine as Private Submarines with Superior Designs
          www.seamagine.com/personal-submarine-...
SEAmagine set up training programs sanctioned by the US Coast Guard in 1999 that resulted in a US Coast Guard Limited Captain's license for its submersibles ...

I read an article not long ago that said there was an increasing number of privately owned submarines that presented a problem to national naval forces. Unlike aircraft or surface vessels, which have active identifying transponders, a submerged vessel is an unknown, since the protocols for submerged ID haven't been worked out yet.

One of the Colregs the 500 pound gorilla of the regulations says othere regs not withstanding do anything that needs doing to avoid a collision including violate all the other rules. In the event of a collision the senior individual on board is just as liable as is a licensed deck officer. There is about zero leeway. Since the rights of way go from sailing vessel under sail to powered vessel under power which covers motor sailing to Sea planes if nothing else and given the definition of a vessel - which includes among other things paddle boards and surf boards, would be nothing less than a powered vessel. regardless of draft or depth.

The ColRegs or Collision Regulations carry the force International Law, National Law and the laws of most States but even if they have none covers all navigable waterrs for example Mississippi to Twin Cities, Sacramento to Sharpe Army Depot on the San Joaquin. The priorities of right of way which puts the three I mentioned at the bottom have one unable to manuever due to nature of work. Aircraft carriers to work boats

RNTONRCFSBS or Rotten Nets Tear Only New Reels Catch Fish So Buy some. translates Responsibility, Narrow Channels, traffic separation schemes, Overtaking, Not under Command, Restricted in Ability to Manuever, constrained by draft, engaged in trawling, under sail only, under power, seaplanes. Sailboats do not always have the right of way and mostly don't. and at the end vesels under and sea planes upon touching down.

The submarine would automatically be vessel under power unless doing one of the manuevers up the list and when submerged would be restricted in ability to manuever. The status from 1 Responsibility and Prudent Seamanship to 10 determines the responsibilty often called Privileged and Burdened Except Rule 2 sort of reverses that and puts the gorilla on the back of anyone that could have avoided the collision regardless of the rules.

There is one other called the Law Of Inverse Proportions. I had the right of way but he was bigger. Tonnage always wins.

So until the USCG says different those are the rules to follow and that ColRegs Manual covers use of radar, night time all sorts of other variations.

So following the first two rules especially 2A and 2B

There will be surprise pop quiz anytime you are boarded by LEA or the Coast Guard.

One question. Boats do NOT come under the same rules as houses etc. for requiring warrants to board or search and USCG has jurisdiction anywhere in the world over any US Flagged or registered vessel of any size unless you are in the waters of another nation - since Washington crossed the Delaware. Can anyone state why? No.. living aboard full time doesn't count.

Living on a boat is one of the most controlled by government ways of life available. The attraction is mobility and if all else is jettisoned affordability.

the rules for operation are a legal covenant and agreement of all maritime nations. You can't go anywhere they don't exist. As a USA citizen you are always subject to US Coast Guard boarding without a warrant anywhere in the world. Sails and frecreational fishing boats blend in. Nukes invite a looksee on a regular basis. From a power viewpoint sails with a diesel auxilary is about the best you can do. until we get the real version of John Galts static motor.

Thanks for the sobering practical details, MA.
Getting a nuclear powered vessel in private hands is probably not allowed for US citizens anyway. The attraction, obviously, is having the freedom of near infinite travel without refueling and near unlimited sub-surface travel, great advantages in enemy/pirate waters or for one who desires real privacy. The feds would never allow that level of liberty to any serf or citizen-slave.
