I entered a baseball team in the Police Athletic league, Policeman ran the whole organization. I listened as one officer bragged “I could arrest you for carrying a ham sandwich and looking hungry.” and he wasn’t kidding. If you do get caught on the wrong side be ready for “There is no justice; just us.”
Do you want to see a galt’s gulch on earth? Watch the documentary “Happy People, A Year in the Tiaga” it’s on Netflix. These people live without any law or government and do you know where they are? Russia! The fertilizer that helps a government grow is fear. It also works well for Insurance companies. Part of Tolstoy’s philosophy consisted of not being afraid to die, in war and peace the bastard son goes on this whole head trip about it. It’s amazing how easily people trade liberty for the promise of safety. Just think how safe you’d be from harm if you were in solitary confinement.

interesting. I will check it out. there are many places where you can get by with de facto freedom. This usually works until there's a problem.

The movie is about Russian fur trappers in Siberia. The river to civilization thaws for a very short time every year, when they can go trade. What I unwillingly might have suggested was a significant population; these guys spread out but support each other quite a bit during the preparation season.
In society overpopulation will force everyone to make difficult decisions. I believe, Objectivism will give everyone a chance to be successful (or survive). Progressivism will ensure we all starve.

There was a tragedy in Suffolk county long island where a drug addict killed 3 people in a drug store. The cops found a suspect the next day and the news showed a school picture. When video of the apprehension was released the guy looked a little lumped up. As the days followed there were photos of the guy having one black eye then two; he was obviously taking beatings while awaiting his trial. I was at a social gathering when the suspect showed up on the TV screen. I remarked how the guy looks worse and worse every time I see him. Another guest at the party said “He gets what he deserves” this gentleman I found out was a police officer. Things went straight down hill in the ensuing conversation and I relented for the sake of our increasingly uncomfortable hosts. I had suggested a police officer brings suspects in for questioning, this can be done in a friendly manner at first. If the suspect complies, they both take a nice ride down town with the understanding the judge wants to talk to the suspect or his lawyer. With 3 police officers standing behind the arresting officer the suspect is most likely going to comply. What happened was the swat team stormed his house and interpreted the suspects eyes popping out of his head as resisting arrest, so they beat him into what they clearly recognized as submission. The officer at the party mumbled “he resisted arrest” when I dropped it. What appeared to me as a bad idea was when his date, apparently recent girlfriend, timidly uttered “I agree with him ( I had quoted a few obvious amendments in the Bill of rights). He leered at her, I hope she was OK when they got home. If police stay focused and perform their duties, unnecessary damage can be mitigated. I believe when they lose focus and believe it is their job to mete out justice the system becomes dysfunctional. I understand when they are on the job there are emotional forces that suggest suspects are guilty, I believe they must resist these urges. The key factor in all of this is time. Using swat is fast and successful, even if you break a few eggs. Waiting for a suspect to go outside and approach them in public takes time, but is probably much safer for everybody. Justice will be served when the process reaches the sentencing stage.

Perhaps 35 or 45 years ago, I recall in an issue of Newsweek a report of a police raid on a home where illegal drugs were believed to exist. All the house walls were pulled down, photos showed the damage and the timber frame, no illegal drugs were found.

This kind of police violence exists in many nations from corruption or personal antagonisms. When it exists as a result of altruism - the imperative to protect people against themselves- it develops until there are no restraints of thuggery and violence.

      hi Lucky!
I am finding more and more of these cases reported recently. I am not sure when there was a real change, but I would have to say, tactics like this are covered in the academies. What ever happened to the helpful and friendly neighborhood policeman? As well, seeing how intimidated people feel about police, just guess what kinds of people are drawn to becoming cops in the first place. We need a serious overhaul in the way police work. safety at what cost?

I also have seen more and more of these cases. It seems that BO and cronies are test driving a new dictatorship. Remember that candidate BO said that the country needed a civilian police force as strong as the military one for the same reasons. What do you think he meant by that?

"I am finding more and more of these cases reported recently."

Then you are barking up the wrong political tree with your "are you listening, law and order republicans?"

You admit that this is recently getting worse, and the Progressives are running the show, and have been for the last 4.5 years.

        Just a suggestion....

Are you suggesting that Progressives only live in The Beltway?

Give me some 'facts' that the GOP is behind this...than you get to say "uh".

I raise, and call you, with the Boston Bombers:

The Democrat run state, city, and Federal government literally 'locked down' an entire major city, dragged people from their homes at gunpoint, confiscated legal weapons, shut business down for almost 48 hours, and all for an unarmed, and wounded, 'punk'.

Then you have the Democrat administration outfitting Homeland Security with Marine Humvees, modified for civilian crowd control.

And the Democrat run Homeland Security buying BILLIONS of gun and rifle rounds.

And the Democrat run IRS arming their agents (first time in history) with assault weapons, and training.

Your posted isolated incidents wouldn't win 'squat' in a poker game....

I never said democrats weren't bad about this. they have to have a plan to keep us from bolting when we wake up and actually see the IVs in our arm. I'm saying, the republicans should be consistent on freedom.

"I never said democrats weren't bad about this."

But, you have never said that they were. And you have constantly complained about the GOP.

Spread the blame around equally...or just get out of the blame mode altogether.

you seem to be taking this personally. I don't expect progressives to behave rationally. I do expect republicans who claim to believe in more freedom, less regulation, to be intellectually consistent. Often they are not. Lately, this has really been bothering me as well as the NSA issue. I am left shaking my head when discussing these issues with those who I agree with on many topics. Oh, and just this week, Christie going after "libertarians." all for the big safety argument.

More like looking for the middle road that is clogged with the Independent voters.

He lost a large part of the base with his love fest with Obama during the Sandy storm. I was a big fan of Christie, before that.

this particular incident happened in Ogden UT, overwhelmingly republican. and of course, it was motivated by a narcotics tip. The republican platform is very clear where it stands on the drug war, despite the costs and filling our jails to capacity with non-violent drug offenders. Mexican cartels flourish in the US due to our own laws regarding drugs. I don't really want to get into it about drugs on this post, but I am not surprised this incident as well as the roadside feeling up of two women was all about suspicion about drugs!

well, the state troopers and police in Texas, a republican stronghold, are responsible for two over-reachs recently. The roadside body cavity search of two females stopped for missing tail lght, and the police who arrested the man wearing a boy scout vest, hiking with his eagle scout son, for carrying a rifle on the hike. He calmly demanded his rights did not resist discussing with them, broke no laws and was handcuffed and taken away while his son was tearfully watching
