Gosh, some honor students won't be getting their mandated propaganda. Sounds like a real opportunity for liberty. The parents should be suing for tax refunds and application to private or home schooling.
Me too. I'm a product of the Detroit Public School system (class of '82). I didn't learn much (thank goodness for books), because the teachers didn't give a damn. They were just killing time for a paycheck. Oh, but the most amusing thing was when one ventured to say, "We're here to teach you how to think". It took a Herculean effort not to laugh. Public school education is regurgitative. Memorize, then repeat back when called upon to do so. If the teachers even bothered to do that. I graduated with three people who couldn't read. I will say one thing in its favor. Graduating from a public school in the ghetto leaves you with terrific survival skills. If you can manage to graduate without being beaten, stabbed, shot or raped, you've learned all they can teach you.
Follow the money. The tests are tied to school funding, good test scores indicate success and money is the reward. If good students refuse testing, the district loses money. Thus thee attempt to force students to take the test.
Most of us freedom lovers have long ago proclaimed there must be not only a separation of church and state, but also education and state, economics and state, etc. At least we are gaining some ground with charter schools and home schooling.
That is true. Testing is the only way (at least currently) that person has learned the subject matter. Assuming the reading test was a fair test, I agree they should not be promoted. My only issue is with with government being the decider. Maybe there are some independent tests that are equal to or better than the government test.
I have long held that public, government-operated education of children can, and will, and does, and must, eventually lead to government thought con- trol. So "holding children hostage" doesn't really come as much of a surprise to me.
Nope, it sure doesn't. It argues for local control at the lowest level (district) with local funding. Or homeschools with commercially available programs, with no taxes at all (eliminate it).
How many of these parents voted for Bush? How many of these parents support government schools? How many of these parents are able to connect the dots and see the big picture? I sympathize with the kids, but not with most of the parents. They're getting what they voted for.
I would be more inclined to believe they did like the large majority of people I know: Either believed the crap politicians spew, or choose the grape koolaid path to freedom. Remember, a lot of parents of 8-9 year olds are products of the new education system, political reliability is more important that real facts or performance. Now they are on the other end of the stick. Yes, they brought it on themselves, but that was the whole truth behind AS.
If the test were eaningful, why are heir so many dummies out there who pass it. They just want to check if you are properly programmed, not educated. Hillary wants free college, because college is just High School 101, fro all they did not teach while they brainwashed kids.
I have no need for administrators who have PHds, and get 250,000 a year to basically sit around and come up with crazy ideas. Politicians already have that job.
Those creating these tests were educated in the public school system that failed them and the result is they want company. there motto is "if I'm screwed up I want you to be screwed up too"
Not exactly new news. Ivy League colleges have been giving the scions of wealthy contributors degrees for pay for several decades. It's only to be expected that the idea of taxpaying parents deserving the same treatment would trickle down.
Well, what I got was the fact a few parents pulled their kids out because they did not see any value in their standardized testing, and are basically being blackmailed by the government. That seems a bit rude on the part of the Empire.

All in all, you're just a fascist control freak.

Those who feel that home-schooling might leave the student at a disadvantage could benefit by reading this list:
