I have long held dogs preferable to people. I often say, if a puppy and a human child were drowning in a lake, I'd *try* to save the child, but I *would* save the puppy.

(Of course, I've *most* often been known to say that in the late afternoon after my neighbor's kids have woken me up with their noisy playing outside, so I may be prejudiced at the time...)
