Read it while you can. I have a feeling the folks at Medium won't leave it up long.

The use of the word "black" in the article feels demeaning. Perhaps "white and black" doesn't describe the situation. Perhaps "white and black" is the phrase of a historical era that we no longer wish to recognize as legitimate. "White" people are diverse. It is time to recognize that "black" people are also diverse, not in comparison to other groups, but within that group as well. A reflection on what makes the group diverse gives us the appreciation that each individual is particular and that each individual has the capability to make choices that are characteristic of himself and of no one else.

Is a friend of mine, for example, who is an EMT and a law-abiding citizen not "black"? Is a family friend of mine who is a retired police chief, not "black"? Is a professional colleague of mine in the Fire Department not "black"? Is anyone with a decent job who obeys the law not "black"??

Public school achievers find themselves under huge social pressure and often physical assault for "acting white". Their peers actually tell them they have to "act black". By their own definition, making all the wrong choices is - being black.

"huge social pressure and often physical assault for acting white.Their peers actually tell them they have to act black. "

Their peers are saying something stupid, and this article completely buys into their peers' stupidity.

          "By their own definition..."

Let's not use their definitions. Some idiots belittle people for working hard, being smart, and not being violent. These are not good role models, not people whose definitions we want to use.

It hasn't been widely publicized that Alton Sterling, who was shot while struggling with two white police officers, had previously committed felony armed assault on several police officers and done several years in prison for that assault. He made his choices. He acted black.
