For those who do not want to go the W10 route, here is a good summary of things to look at to keep your W7 installs going to the bitter end.. And no, it does not apply to all the Linux crowd, so just keep smiling..

Any advice for 8.1? I have a 7 also and I thank you for the tips.

  8.1 will have a couple more years left. I am not exactly in tune with Freedoms thoughts on what is needed for updates, in that MS leaves holes in their stuff and the bad guys diligently work to find them, whereas MS does not make that effort as it is not cost effective to them. So, I look at every update from now on, if it describes a security vulnerability, I usually apply it, if it is vague or "corrects or improves the user experience" I ignore it, as it usually means they are lying and it is some data gathering thing they are sneaking in. You can trust MS as far as the government, for looking out for you, they are only looking out for them, and selling you a defective product from day 1. They just do not know what the defects are. If I see anything on 8.1 I will post it.

    I have shut off all updates from day one and so far, none have gotten through but with our 7, even though update were blocked...one got in and caused havoc...had to restore it back a few weeks.

      Personally, I am not sure if there is or isn't value in getting specific updates. In and of itself, a fresh install will function, so as long as it is doing the job, good for you. I found that I needed some updates for USB3.0 and 3.1 that I actually had to go look for, as WU never offered them, and made things painful to use it. So, I guess there are specific times and needs.

Windows 7 Updates? Bullshit. More fear mongering from MSFT shills.
Use your head about executables (incl scripts) from unknown sources (do not run them), do not post any personal info or photos to the net social media, avoid cloud based apps and "free" storage, use a VPN, make regular backups to external storage, and keep 3rd party virus software up to date (daily.)
The above is based on 35 years of personal and business experience. YMMV.

  True for someone with an understanding, but the vast number of users can barely figure out "cut and paste". 90% of the problems I fix for people are self inflicted, that doesn't mean they are not real. So, we need to try to find whatever is best for the most.

    Staying away from any MSFT computer software product after W7 SP1 is a top priority for anyone who cares abou his privacy, imo.
    It doesn't take a brain surgeon or rocket scientist or hacker genius to do what I described. Very simple rules to follow and unless you are singled out by a hacker as a target you have a very low chance of harmful infection.
    The 90% in your example don't follow those simple rules, do they?
    They use a computer as if it was a 1970 tv. Updates from MSFT make it worse, not better, for these neophytes. They should not be misled by articles pushing updates.
    I agree they can't figure out cut and paste. (Why are they allowed to vote?)

      Exactly. Computers have reflected the entire social dysfunction. "Gimme a toy, I want it to work, I want to abuse it. I want to complain when the CD drive doesn't eject the PBJ sandwich. I want to go to any website with out any protection and then I want to bitch and moan when I have no money because some idiot in aganzikhastian took it and all my identity". If you go to tech republic, they had some laughable examples of tech support requests from back when PCs came with it, some of the ones I mentioned really did happen. But people who can honestly think that way reflect the majority of America today. No responsibility, no thought, no effort. Just gimme, gimme, gimme. Indeed, why we will have HillaryBeast as our next President. We are severely outnumbered by them, and they are not limited to the left.

        It only takes an IQ of 115 to be part of a 16% minority. That's pretty outnumbered, but some here are at the 1% minority level (~140+.) Granted, IQ is no guarantee of ethical conduct or rationality.
        Shame on those Aganzikhastians for preying of the mentally defenseless. Of course, the banksters and statists set such a good ethical example.
