Moms Night Out / Rated PG for thematic elements and action sequences.
Headed for DVD comedy soon, MNO opened the day before Mother’s Day 2014 and the story line opens on Mother’s Day, year not specified. Coincidence? It’s a simple and familiar story told with a lot of good natured humor and cleverness. It’s all about a 30 something mom, played by 30 something Sarah Drew, who is best known for her continuing role as Dr. April Kepner on TV’s Grey’s Anatomy. She is the mom of 3 small children who appear to be making her lose herself into the black hole of housewife, mommy-dom and haggard chauffeur. She needs a break.
Sean Astin is her 30 something husband who travels a lot leaving SD to cope with the kids. This does not appear easy. Logan White is her 30 something friend who has her own issues. Better known, Patricia Heaton from TV’s The Middle and Everybody Loves Raymond, is the slightly older mom and wife of the pastor of the local church everyone attends. She has a 17 year old daughter. Enough said.
About 30 minutes into the film the 3 ladies decide to leave the kids at home and have a Moms Night Out. Hence the title. Just the 3 of them out for a nice dinner and a little fun. No drinking allowed. What could go wrong? The simple answer. Everything.
Everything is a lot of fun. No bad words. No violence. No sex. No snarling evil villains. Unfortunately, it also appears no box office result.
Along the way, singer Trace Adkins shows up as a sagely wise biker gang banger with a checkered past. There is also a very funny British cabbie. The guy behind the counter at the tattoo parlor is also lots of laughs. More fun at the local jail. What in the world are they doing there? The nice dinner turns out to be a bowling alley adventure due to a small mistake. Their car disappears with a parakeet named Mama aboard. Where did the baby go? Why are they in an alley. Meanwhile, what is going on back at the home front? You don’t want to ask.
A fun, humorous and sweet Mother’s Day movie. When you wait for the DVD, as we both know you will, be sure to stay until the very end of the credits. The story continues with lots more fun and cleverness, which this film has demonstrated throughout, all the way to the final fade out.
Rated 3.4 out of 4.0 reasons, Mom’s rule. And deserve a night out.
