New: Ryan Tells CNN He's 'Not Ready to Support' Trump

House Speaker Paul Ryan joined Jake Tapper on CNN Thursday to discuss whether or not he’ll endorse Donald Trump in the 2016 election, now that he’s the presumptive GOP nominee. Mitt Romney, who chose Ryan as his running mate in 2012, has already indicated he won’t support Trump, opting to skip this year’s RNC convention.

What about Ryan?

“To be perfectly candid, I’m not ready to support” Trump at this point, Ryan told Tapper.

“I don’t want to underplay what he accomplished,” Ryan continued. But, to unify the party, we need to do more than say it, we need to actually "advance our conservative principles," he insisted.

As of now, he's not sure Trump can do that.

Ryan’s comments perhaps come as no surprise, considering he has repeatedly denounced Trump’s campaign behavior since assuming the speakership. For instance, although he says he didn’t want to weigh in on the primary, Ryan made an exception in March after Trump proposed to ban Muslims from entering the country. That plan, Ryan said, “is not conservatism.”

Ryan noted he didn't think he'd have to make a decision so soon, expecting the race to at least last until June. As the chair of the GOP convention, Ryan hopes Trump will have proved by then he can unify the party.

"I hope to support his candidacy fully," he said.

If there is some kind of coup against Trump at the GOP convention, Ryan will have to be part of it. I'm glad he is considering that option.

But maybe he is just hoping that Trump will offer him the job of VP. Ryan is certainly quisling enough to accept.

Ryan couldn't even beat Uncle Joe in a debate or win his home state for Romney. His most useful role for the GOP would be as a bookkeeper.

Ryan will come around. It's just a bit of political theater, as was his so-called reluctance to take the Speakership.

And if Ryan had actually stood on any of those Conservative principles, people might take him seriously.

This is political gamesmanship. Ryan is coming out of the blocks trying to see what positions Trump is going to agree with him on. But I will give credit to Ryan for identifying that Trump is not a traditional Conservative. The majority of his policies are far closer to the Progressive playbook than those of the Constitution.

Old Dino is not ready to support Paul Ryan. How?
The GOP keeps sending me donation questionnaires that feature House Speaker Paul Ryan.
I always answer one question by pointing out that Obama actually thanked caving wimp Paul Ryan for "making government work."
Before I sent back a Paul Ryan yesterday, I marked $10 as a donation.
What they got was a $10 off voucher from the Botanic Choice mail order company.
I only have fun on the GOP dime. If I have to supply the stamp, I simply trash the letter.

How Ryan can say this with a straight face proves how unworthy he is of the Speaker's office. His "conservative" principles didn't stand in the way of an obscene deal with Obama, with the sole positive aspect for the budget was to allow overseas marketing and sales of U.S. oil.

Forward to the past when you were our unconditional, unaware, uneducated slaves.

    Hmm...sounds like we're almost their...

True Progressivism is not progressive the way most folks think of it . A better definition is changing one master for another with shinier but more efficient whip. The other thing they are good at is regressing in every area except lining the pockets of their built in ruling class.

Ryan is an idiot. This is something that should not be talked about publicly. My guess is he wants a say in who gets the VP nod and his "support" can be bought with the right candidate. So far he is not handling his Speakership duties well.

Any group that takes power entrenches and defends it's position classic definition of conservative. Today that would be the Government Party AKA Socialist part with everything from Sanders and Hiollary thorugh Trump to the right wing of the left RINOs and CINOs. Actually the old classic meanings do apply it's the newly 'framed' and 'redefined' meanings of liberal and conservative that are worthless along wit Republican and Democrat.

Or Trump's daughter could be threatened a la Perot.
Oh, sorry, that wouldn't work. Perot actually cared about his daughter.

Not sure WHAT "Conservatism" he's referring to but protecting the country is to Conserve the country.
I guess, like all things turned progressive, the old meanings don't apply.

Banning different groups for protection, because there are questions and concerns, we are justified by doing so. It has been done before. It's constitutional which WAS the original conservative intent.

First the military takes aim at the White House then the Rules Committee and now Ryan says he's not ready to support Trump.

Next thing you know Fiorina will replace Hillary.

The signals are flying at full mast. First the Rules Committee now the congressional leadership.

Still think it's in the bag?

They will do what best serves themselves.

Including making a deal to dump Hillary and Trump.

    It isn't that difficult.

    And you don't count.

Come to think of it the convention could pick Ryan as the candidate. Bwa ha ha ha ha
