Is there really such an increase in violence that LEO's need military grade equipment?

Do miss the comment that returning Vets know how to build IED's.

    WTF??? Really???? Returning war vets are a possible terrorist threat? Only if you consider patriotism and a desire to see the Constitution rule our land instead of arbitrary regulations, legislation by the judiciary, and wholly unconstitutional actions by the executive and even legislative branches.

      Maybe you're not aware of this, but it's a common practice for gangs to tell their members to join the military. The gang members then receive training at the expense of the U.S. government, as well as real life combat experience overseas. And when they come back, they use the tactics they've learned against local law enforcement. Does this mean all military veterans are gang members? No, of course not. A vast majority of veterans are genuine patriots who simply want to defend their country. But to ignore the reality of homeland gangs who receive military training is incredibly foolish. When military tactics are used against local law enforcement, it becomes necessary for local law enforcement to militarize itself for its own protection.

          I'll never forget the photo they showed us of the slogan "Support Your Local Hell's Angels" spray-painted onto the side of a building... in Afghanistan.

              They didn't specify. They just said increased violence. Violence can come from gangs, or it can come from other sources. But regardless of the source, law enforcement needs to be prepared to handle it. If that means military vehicles and military weapons, so be it.

                No. It's a way around the Posse Comitatus Act.
                The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385) passed on June 16, 1878 after the end of Reconstruction. The Act was intended to prohibit Federal troops from supervising elections in former Confederate states. It generally prohibits Federal military personnel and units of the United States National Guard under Federal authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the United States, except where expressly authorized by the Constitution or Congress.                   The purpose of the Posse Comitatus Act is to limit the powers of Federal government in using federal military personnel to enforce state laws. That's not what this is. This is about giving state personal military equipment, which is something totally different from giving federal personal authority to enforce state laws.

                  State personnel do not suddenly become federal personnel simply because they've been given military equipment. A local sheriff with an M-16 is still a local sheriff. He just has more firepower.

                    Explain the difference between a cop driving a tank and a soldier driving a tank. I doubt those getting run over care one way or the other.

                      An armored truck is not a tank.

                      And the difference between a cop driving an armored truck and a soldier driving an armored truck is the level of government to which they answer. Law enforcement answers to the state government, while military answers to the federal government.

                      Though actually, a soldier could still answer to the state government, if they're in the National Guard.

    Yeah, Tim McVeigh knew how to build a very, very powerful IED.

    And that guy in the 1930s who blew up the school seemed to know how to build an IED. Dunno if he was a vet, though.
