This article was posted last year by gaiagal. Its worth repeating on the chance that someone missed it. Reading this article should make one thing abundantly clear: Everything being done has been done with the blessing of both the Democrats and the Republicans. Don't waste your vote on any of them.

A theme in Atlas Shrugged - keep creating more and more laws and regulations and eventually you will make everyone a criminal - with the self imposed guilt and the literal breaking of the law - they gain leverage and control over everyone.

Look at the massive scope of those NSA data facilities - they are collecting huge amounts of data above and beyond what they are stating. There's no reason for such facilities otherwise. The processing power and data storage capabilities must be mind numbing - just for cell phone meta data - yeah right! More like EVERYTHING moving across the internet, cell communications, radio broadcast data, etc... worldwide.

And they are doing it with our consent, either implied or contractually given (albeit likely fradulent.)
Removing their ability to fund the costs is the peaceful method to restrict their activities, but no one has the guts to do it.

Keep people uneducated and convince them it's to keep them safe and they'll go for anything. Brings to mind Franklins quote:
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety"

I have a customer who worked for the NSA years ago. I told him my Facebook account was hacked into twice and I thought it was big brother. He said it probably was but if you aren't doing anything wrong, so what. What a dangerous attitude to have. If Government decides what is right and wrong I'm sure I'll do something wrong if the Government needs me to.

Last year I went on a long fishing trip with a group of guys and one of them is an NSA snoop. We had some interesting conversations. He really, deep-down, believes that there is no risk to what he is involved in. I mentioned that a couple of my buddies and I occasionally turn off our phones when we get together and talk and he just smiled and let me know that they can turn them on and still listen to us. Interesting that, at a personal level, I got along with him fine. We agreed on many things and on a few things we were at opposite ends of the spectrum.

I don't know if I would call it a regret. But, I have very serious concerns about bringing children into this system we live in now. Through some things I've experienced as a parent I came to grasp just how bad things are, though.

Exactly. For example, you receive a large profit from anything, or make some innocent comment online, and suddenly you become a target for government blackmail, or worse.

I thought of that the other night. A friend of mine was a History major in college. We were talking about Hitler the other night and his tremendous skill at delivering speeches. He sent me links to a couple of Youtube videos and I thought this would not look good if someone wanted to attack me and my character. They could say I sit around at night watching Hitler speeches.

Thats why we need to use a vpn. (Given that the statist bastards aren't going to stop doing what is intolerable and no one has the guts to do anything about it.)

I'm pretty well convinced that the US Government can break standard encryption schemes very very quickly. VPN, SSL encryption between client/server, etc... The recent deal with the Apple phone was a particular issue to them as it was booby trapped to kill the data by trying to brute force the password. If it hadn't been for that - they would have been right into it.

The Government has always claimed oversight and regulatory control over any communication method you can use - and with that the ability to listen in on it.
